Cruella

Cruella is a 2021 American criminal comedy film inspired on Dodie Smith's

1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians' character Cruella de Vil. Craig
Gillespie directed the film, which was written by Dana Fox and Tony
McNamara and based on a narrative by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel,
and Steve Zissis. It is the third live-action adaption in the 101 Dalmatians
series, and it acts as both a reboot and an origin tale for the main character.
Emma Stone plays the main character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul
Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong
round out the cast. Set in London amid the punk rock movement of the 1970s,
the film follows Estella Miller, an aspiring fashion designer, as she explores
the road that will lead her to become Cruella de Vil, an infamous up-and-
coming fashion designer.

In 2013, Walt Disney Pictures announced the film's development, with

Andrew Gunn serving as producer. Stone was cast in the picture in 2016, and
she also acts as an executive producer with Glenn Close, who played Cruella in
the previous live-action versions, 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians
(1998). (2000). The majority of the filming took done in England between
August and November of 2019.

Cruella debuted in Los Angeles on May 18, 2021, the first big red carpet event
since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and was released theatrically in the
United States on May 28 and concurrently available on Disney+ with its
Premier Access feature. The film garnered mixed to good reviews, with critics
praising the performances (especially those of Stone, Thompson, and Hauser),
Gillespie's directing, visual style, costume design, production values, and
music, but criticizing the narrative. It earned more than $233 million
worldwide, making it the tenth highest-grossing picture of 2021. A sequel is
currently in the works, with Stone reprising her role.
