EXAMPLE PROBLEM

The AC waveform shown on the screen of the oscilloscope has a width = 3.6 cm and the voltage peak-to
peak of the signal is 10.4 volts. If the oscilloscope volt/cm knob is set at 5v/cm and the time/cm knob is
set at 10millisec/cm, find the following:

a. The height of the wave form b. the average voltage

c. The frequency of the waveform d. the peak voltage
e. Vrms

Solution

Given:

Volts/cm = 5v/cm
T/cm = 10msec
Vpp = 10.4 volts

Vp

Vpp

3.6 cm.
T/cm = 10msec./cm

a. Height of the wave form

H = 10.4v [cm/5v] = 2.08 cm.

b. Vp = 10.4/ 2 = 5.2 v
Eave = 0.637(5.2)
= 3.312 volts

c. T = [10msec/cm] [3.6cm]
= [10/1000][3.6]
= 0.036 sec.

F = 1/T
= 1/ 0.036 sec.
= 27.78 Hz.

d. Vp = 5.2 volts
e. Vrms = 0.707 Vp
= 0.707(5.2)
= 3.67 volts
