As it has been said on Frayling's article there are three types of research in the world of Art
and design including:
Research into art and design
Research for art and design
Research for Art and design

Research into art ad design in the most straightforward and by far the most common
(Frayling, 1993). This type of research can be demonstrated in the music by researches about
different periods and the cultural, political and social environment that classical music
composers lived at and also and its relation with understanding of the certain piece. For
example, what kind of social or cultural or mental situation made hector Berlioz composing
the Symphony Fantastique and what did he mean by using Fix Idea in his piece? Or why
Beethoven decide not to dedicate his third symphony to Napoleon?

Research through art and design is the next large category made of three smaller sections:
Material research, Development work and Action research. Material research and
development has been implied in a practical way in development of instruments such as
Classical Guitar and Piano up until very recent. Also further researches can improve the
instruments quality even further. Action research can be done in various ways in music For
example, how nail shape can help Classical guitarist to play with more ease and also be able
to produce a nice and enriched sound.

Research for art and design is one of the most important aspect of research in art for Concert
artists, conductors and whoever is in touch with performance. Nowadays, applying the very
old aesthetic of art of performing in different time periods in music history to reach a
authentic performance is a must for any musician.
