The Gift Outright analysis

When this poem is looked at, there is no rhyme scheme. However there was a rhythm

with Iambic Pentameter. This means that this poem is written in Blank Verse. There are some

rhetorical devices such as personification by giving America the pronoun she which is seen very

prominently throughout the poem. This is because America is the main focus of the poem and

generally countries, boats, and ships. America is also said to be possessed or is possessing

something or people. There is also enjambment in sentences breaking them up into separate

lines. There is also lots of repetition and alliteration. There is lots of the use of the word “land”

which talks about America and its area. There is alliteration in the ‘s’ sound as well as the ‘w’

sound.

This poem talks about America and colonization of America. We see that we saw

America as just land rather than a possible independent country. We hadn’t accepted it for

what it could be or what it can be in the future. Our decline of acknowledgement of America

and its possible independence, pushed us away from owning and understanding ourselves.

After we had accepted America as more than just land, we learned that America was ours so we

fought for it in the Revolutionary War. We earned America by fighting for it and we should now

respect it for what it’s worth and more.
