Final exam (CHE 61 A) – FLUID FLOW PROBLEM

SOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM COMPLETELY, OBSERVING ALL THE RECOMMENDED SOLUTION
STEPS, OTHERWISE YOUR WORK WILL NOT BE MARKED.

A saline solution (specific gravity =1.2, temperature = 25°C, viscosity similar to that of water at this condition) stored
in an open feed tank is being pumped to an overhead tank. The efficiency of the pump is 60 %. The velocity in the
suction line (5 m long) is 1.0 m/s. The pump discharges thru another pipeline to an overhead tank. The discharge line
is 20 m. The end of the discharge pipe is 15.2 m above the solution surface level in the feed tank, and this end is not
submerged in the liquid at the overhead tank. There is one gate valve in the suction line and there are three 90° elbows
and 1 gate valve at the discharge line.
1. Recommend the best pipe size to use for both suction and discharge lines (Schedule 40 nominal size in
inches). Hint: it would be more convenient to use the applicable equation for opt pipe diameter, not the
nomograph
2. Calculate all the friction losses ∑F in J/kg
3. Calculate the work supplied by the pump to the fluid in J/kg
4. Calculate the brake KW power of the pump
