Lesson
Identifying Direct and Indirect
1 Speech

Have you tried to retell the message which your friend told you? Were all the ideas
completely stated? If your answers are all yes, then you are a good listener! As a
Grade 7 student, it is very important to know how to transfer the message to
another person. This module teaches you how to do it. You will be guided on how to
apply the rules when you retell the message to another person. To start, let us
discuss first the difference between direct speech and reported speech. This lesson
will help you how to identify it.

What’s In

You have a here a short dialogue between Jean and Lisa. Read it and find put what
are those underlined words.

A.
The Gossip Girls
One sunny afternoon, two girls were gossiping in front of their house about the
incident that they have witnessed last night. One of their neighbors and friend has
been fetched by the ambulance because she was suspected to have COVID-19.

“Your The doctor LISA

JEAN
COVID-19 said that her
test result is COVID-19
positive,” the test result
doctor said. was positive.

“They took Lisa said that

her to the they had LISA
JEAN
hospital last taken her to
night” the hospital.

7
The underlined words are verbs. In your previous lesson, Quarter 1- Module 4, you
learned already what verbs are and when to use its past and past perfect tense.

Your knowledge of the tense of the verb will be very helpful in our topic, “Direct and
Reported Speech.” Before going further about it, let us know first what is a direct
speech as well as the reported speech. Are you now ready?

What’s New

You have here another short dialogue between Jean and Lisa. Read it and find out
what they are talking about.

B.

Jean said
“Our friend is that our
sick, and she friend is sick
JEAN LISA
is in the and she was
hospital.” in the
hospital.

Jean said
“We are not that we were
allowed to not allowed
JEAN visit our LISA
to visit our
friend friend
because she because she
is a COVID19 is a COVID19
patient.” patient.

What positive value is reflected in the conversations between Teacher Marie and
Ben? Have you visited your friend, classmate or anybody who was sick at home or

8
in the hospital? Is it helpful to be caring to someone who is in need? But even if we
want to visit them, we cannot do that now because of the current situation which is
the COVID19 pandemic.

Being very helpful, kind, caring, loving, or showing concern to our fellowmen is a
good value. Our ancestors (old family members) have some values which we should
preserve and apply for us to become productive Filipinos.

Now, let us analyse Jean and Lisa’s conversations.

1. How are the lines of Jean presented? How about Lisa’s?

2. What tense of the verb was used in the lines of Jean? Lisa?
3. Which of the characters used direct speech? Reported speech?

Note that Jean’s lines are original lines based on how the speaker mentioned it.
They are enclosed with a quotation mark. Those lines are examples of direct
speech.

Direct Speech is a sentence that

gives a statement or thought in its
original form according to how the
original speaker said that.

For example:

“Our friend is sick, and she is in the hospital,” Jean said

or

“We are not allowed to visit our friend because she is a

COVID19 patient,” she said.

Now, look closely at Lisa’s lines. The quotation marks and the comma were omitted.
The word “that” was added. The tense of the verb was changed and the pronoun.
Those lines are examples of reported speech.

9
Reported Speech is a sentence that
expresses the content of a statement
without quoting just like what is
done in direct speech.

When reporting speech, the tense usually changes. This is because when we use
reported speech, we are usually talking about a time in the past (because obviously
the person who spoke originally spoke in the past). The verbs therefore usually
must be in the past too.

For example:

Jean said that our friend is sick, and she was in the hospital.

Jean said that we were not allowed to visit our friend because
she is a COVID19 patient.

Activity 1: Guess What!

A. Read the sentences below. Identify which sentences are DIRECT SPEECH
and which are also REPORTED SPEECH. Write your answers in your answer
sheet.

1. Grandpa said to me, “Please fetch my glasses.”

2. Claire said that she will invite the neighbors.
3. She says, “I am a little bit nervous.”
4. They said that they took yoga classes.
5. He says, “I am happy.”

B. Copy the paragraph in your answer sheet. Underline once the direct speech
once and underline twice the reported speech.

The National Power Corporation said that for as long as waterfalls do not run dry,
we can be assured of hydroelectric power. “We can make the awesome heat energy
from the earth, feared so much in volcanoes, and work to our advantage,” Arturo P.
Alcaraz said.

10
People opposed to the nuclear plants remark that we should learn from the
mistakes of other countries and not run the risk of radiation leaks which have
proven to be deadly.

Lesson
Changing Direct Speech to Reported
2 Speech

On lesson 1, you have learned the difference between a direct speech and a
reported speech. Now, you will learn how to change a direct speech to a reported
speech and vice versa (reported speech to direct speech). Here is the deeper
explanation about it.

What is It

When changing direct speech to reported speech, the following should be observed:

1. The quotation mark and the comma are no longer used in the reported
speech.
Example:

Direct Speech Reported Speech

“Grandmother teaches me how to Sheila said that her grandmother
cook,” Sheila said. taught her how to cook.

2. Follow the format of the introductory words in the Reported Speech:

noun/ pronoun + said

Example:

Direct Speech Reported Speech

“Grandmother teaches me how to Sheila said that her grandmother

11
cook,” Sheila said. taught her how to cook.

“Grandmother teaches me how to She said that her grandmother

cook, “she said. taught her how to cook.

3. The word that is used to introduce the reported statement.

Example:

Direct Speech Reported Speech

“Grandmother teaches me how to Sheila said that her grandmother
cook,” Sheila said. taught her how to cook.

4. The verb tense is changed in the direct speech to the reported speech.

As a rule, when you report something someone has said you go back a tense: (the
tense on the left changes to the tense on the right):

Direct Speech Reported Speech

Present Simple Past Simple

She said, “It is summer.” She said it was summer.

Present continuous Past continuous

She said, “I am teaching She said she was teaching
English in public school.” English in public school.

Present perfect simple Past perfect simple

arrived.” when he arrived.

Past perfect continuous Past perfect continuous

She said, “I had already been NO CHANGE - She said she

five minutes.

Modal Verb forms also sometimes change:

Direct Speech Reported Speech

Will Would
She said, “I will pick up the She said she would pick up
sandwiches.” the sandwiches.

Can Could
Jeter said, “I can play a Jeter said he could play a
guitar.” guitar.

Must Had to
They said, “We must finish the They said that they had to
coastal the cleanup on time.” finish the coastal cleanup on
time.

13
Shall Should
They said, “We shall help our They said they should help
government.” their government.

May Might
Yzabela said, “I may call a Yzabela said that she might
doctor now.” call a doctor now.

Note: There is no change to; could, would, should, might and ought to.

Direct Speech Reported Speech

“I might attend the meeting My friend said that he might

later.”, my friend said. attend the meeting later.

You can also use the present tense if you are talking about a future event.

Direct Speech Reported Speech

“Next week’s lesson is on She said next week’s lesson
reported speech”, she said will be on reported speech.

5. Time changes.
If the reported sentence contains an expression of time, you must change it
to fit in with the time of reporting. For example, we need to change words
like here and yesterday.

Expressions of time if reported on a different day

This (evening) That (evening)
Today Yesterday
These (days) Those (days)
Now Then
(a week) ago (a week) before
Last weekend The weekend before
last/previous week
Here There
Next (week) The following (week)
tomorrow The next/following day

6. Pronoun also changes.

For example:

14
Direct Speech
She said, “I teach English
online.”
Reported Speech
She said she teaches English
online.
“I teach English online.”
or
She said she taught English
online.

Reporting Verbs

When changing the reported speech back to its direct speech, follow the steps
below:

1. Analyze the sentence first. Underline the thought of the sentence.

Example: The class monitor said that the students were all present.

The underlined words is the thought of the sentence.

2. Capitalize the letter of the first word of the underlined words. Enclose
quotations marks (“”) and put comma before the close quotation.

Example: “The students were all present,”

3. a. Change the verb: past tense to present tense; past perfect tense to past
tense.

Example: “The students were all present,”

Answer: “The students are all present,”

b. Change also the modal: from past to present

or future modal.

Example: The girl said that she could dance

Answer: The girl said that she can dance.

Note: Replace the pronoun she with a pronoun I in the sentence.

Example: The girl said that she could dance.

“I can dance,” the girl said.

15
4. After doing all the steps, add: noun/ pronoun + said then put a period.

Examples: “The students are all present,” the class monitor said.

“I can dance,” the girl said.

Said, told and asked are the most common verbs used in indirect speech.

1. We used asked to report questions:

For example: I asked Grace what time the bus left.

2. We used told with an object.

For example: Noah told me she felt tired.

3. We usually use said without an object.

For example: Caleb said she was going to play mobile games online.

4. If said is used with an object we must include to.

For example: Jeter said to me that he had never been to Baguio.

There are many other verbs we can use apart from said, told and asked. These are:

accused, admitted, advised, alleged, agreed, apologized,

begged, boasted, complained, denied, explained, implied,
invited, offered, ordered, promised, replied, suggested,
and thought

By using them properly, you can make your statement much more interesting and
informative.

For example:

Yannich asked me to come to his beach party.

Yannich invited me to his birthday party.

Yannich begged me to come to his beach party.

Yannich ordered me to come to his beach party.

Yannich advised me to come to his beach party.

Use of “That” in reported speech
In reported speech, the word “that” is often used.
For example:
Direct Speech: He told me, “I lived in Davao.”
Reported Speech: He told me that he lived in Davao.

16
*However, that is optional.

For example:
Direct Speech: He told me, “I lived in Davao.”
Reported Speech: He told me he lived in Davao.
Note: “that” is never used in questions, instead we often use “if”.

For example:
Direct Speech: He asked me, “Will you come to the party?”
Reported Speech: He asked me if I would come to the party.

Life Lesson (Direct Speech):

Life Lesson (Reported Speech):

Assessment

Below is a news article about a Filipino who survived the corona virus disease. The
said article contains eleven direct speeches. Identify the ten and transform them
into reported ones.

21
A COVID survivor’s story: Faith saved me from the brink of insanity and death

It was faith that held intact a man on the brink of insanity brought about by his isolation,
depression, and fear as he battled the dreaded coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Fear that he could
die alone any moment and not having the chance to live the life that God may have wanted him to.

“I realized I am nothing and I could die instantly, and it could be a very lonely death.” “If I didn’t
have the chance to live a life the Lord wanted me to, it could be too late by then.”, he shared.

It is no ordinary feat to recover from COVID-19, which now afflicts the world. No one is spared from
the disease. Even medical professionals die due to exposure and the non-disclosure of some
patients of their symptoms and travel history.

This patient from Pasay City shared with Manila Bulletin the struggle he faced for two weeks after
he turned out positive for the disease.

It was on March 13 when he was brought to the Makati Medical Center by his wife and son after
learning from a friend who was doing contact tracing that he could have been possibly exposed to a
COVID positive patient in one gathering.

“Being isolated for more than two weeks was really difficult.” “I couldn’t help but feel depressed and
feared for my life especially upon seeing all the news on TV and the Internet,” he said.

If it were not for the Internet connection and the face of his family that he sees on the screen, the
18 days at the hospital could have taken a toll on him. Apart from that, the city’s second COVID-19
patient renewed his faith in God during his ordeal.

“While in isolation, I also rediscovered God and developed a closer love relationship with the Lord.”
“During my most difficult times, I turned to God and lifted everything to Him,” he said.

Part of the treatment was for him to remain tranquil. As with other patients, the psychological
aspect of fighting the disease was just as significant as the physical treatment. It helped that he
took his mind off the complication of his situation by filling his mind with positive things.

“While in isolation, I spent my time praying.” “I also listened to inspirational talks to remove all my
fears, worries, and anxieties,” he said.

He likened people’s negative thoughts to birds, hovering around the head.

“These negative thoughts are like birds and I can’t keep them from flying around but I can certainly
keep them from building a nest on my head,” he said.

After his third and fourth tests yielded negative results, he was finally healed and ready to go home.

“The ordeal also made me realize that God will never abandon us in our most difficult times.” “All
we have to do is to hold on to our faith and to believe in the power of prayer,” he said.
