WRITING PORTFOLIO

“The art of writing is in the rewriting”

INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR TEACHERS

Description:
The “Writing Portfolio” activity raises students’ awareness of the writing process, in which a writing
checklist plays an important role. We can use tools in the writing process such as making a rough draft,
peer-editing, and writing a final draft. Teachers guide students through each item on the checklist
before the publishing stage, including the process of peer-editing. The writing checklist provides
students specific criteria that can be checked off when they complete their writing assignments. We can
also use it as a guideline for peer-editing.

Procedures:
▪ Teachers create/edit a writing checklist for writing lessons. The elements of writing checklists
should be created based on students’ level, students’ need, and types of writing. Common
challenges which might involve looking at spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word choice
must also be included.
▪ Teachers assign students to do a writing task.
▪ Teachers introduce the writing checklist to students.
▪ Teachers have students go through each item on the writing checklist to check understanding.
▪ Students use this guide to write their first draft and submit it to teachers.
▪ Teachers pick some of the students’ writing papers with common mistakes to post on a Padlet –
an interactive space that allows students to comment on the selected works.
Notes: writing works published on Padlet should remain anonymous.
▪ Teachers have students give feedback on the writing papers posted on Padlet.
Students must use items on the writing checklist to evaluate the selected pieces of writing.
▪ After the peer-review activity on Padlet, students write the second draft.
▪ Students submit their final draft and add it to their writing portfolio (a digital or physical
collection of student writing throughout the semester.
