First Quarter- PT No. 2: The Spreading Seafloor Model

NAME: Aaron Daniel Amoto

In this activity, you will be able to:

 Create a model of seafloor spreading; and
 Describe the theory of seafloor spreading.

Materials:
 8” x 11” colored paper
 8” x 11” bond paper
 Ruler
 Colored marking pens
 Pair of scissors

Procedure:
1. Fold the colored paper in half lengthwise. Then, fold the colored paper like an accordion, into
eights. Make sure to let the paper crease and have fold marks.
2. Unfold the sheet. Then, fold it again lengthwise and make around 6 – cm cuts on the first,
fourth, and seventh fold. When you fold it again, the cuts should form slits.
3. Draw parallel lines across the lengthwise piece of bond paper. The lines should vary in spacing
and thickness. Fold the sheet lengthwise in half and write the work START marks facing each
other.
4. Cut it along the fold mark and put it together in such a way that the START marks are facing
each other.
5. Insert the bottom end of the pieces of paper into the fourth slit and the START ends into the
first and seventh slit respectively.
6. Pull the START ends of the strip and observe what happens on the middle slit.
7. Answer the guide questions that follow.
8. Submit the edited copy of this worksheet thru Edmodo.

Guide Questions:
1. What does the colored paper represent?
The colored paper represents magma. It is the thing underneath the tectonic plate that will rise if its split.
2. What do the lines on the bond paper represent?
The lines on the bond paper represents the cooled magma. It determines the age of the cooled magma
and rocks as the sea floor spreads during period of time.

3. Describe and compare the white strip in the slit each end and in the middle slit.
The different colors in the strip of bond paper represents the number of period of normal and reverse
magnetism. It is an implication that the process continues with new rocks with the occurence of magnetic
reversals

4. If the model represents seafloor spreading theory, how would you describe this theory in your
own words?
Seafloor spreading theory is that the crust is moving away from the ridge.
