CASE STUDY 2

INDIAN AVIATION IS CHANGING MORE QUICKLY DUE TO THE PANDEMIC

A. How has the market structure of airlines industry in India changed over the period
since Independence?

Before the independence, Indian airlines had monopoly market structure which means single
seller and large number of buyers and at that moment of time there was only Air India which
was providing aviation services. But after some time the market structure shifted to pure
oligopoly where a big few firms in the industry dominated the market. And nowadays the
market structure is known as differentiated oligopoly because there are different kinds of
airlines which provide different kind of services depending upon following factors like fare,
domestic travel, international travel, quality of service etc.
