As one of many forms of thought that Gurdjieff experimented wit, it remains the most power- fal and evocative, I is a masterpiece of symbolic art ew realize that symbols are more than codifcations of profound and ancient understanding; that they are, in ther essence, starting points for action in the moment. They make no sense if they are taken ab static configurations, residing in an eternity ouside of the present moment. ‘When Gurdjieff said that something had been left out ofhis presentation, without which the symbol ofthe enneagram could not be understood, 1 believe he was referting tothe action that can initiate uniguely in 2 ‘human being. Symbols are about the creative work that can unfold in us. ‘Without this action, symbols become part of encultuation, a contribu tion to sleep, ‘The enneagram isthe tip of an iceberg the iceberg in its greater mass being the unspoken thoughts of humankind, which are sometimes called ‘the noosphere. Its nota terminus but a stating point. As we enter into it the enneagram dissolves into an intensity of thought that we can hardly sustain, Iti then no different from the Kabbalistic Tree of Life othe [ems ofthe Ching. Only 0 see this, we have to be able to create our ‘own forms. eis stikng that very few of the reporters and commentators on the cennecagram ever remark on the astonishing hypothesis it contains ofthe Interweaving of three octaves or worlds or kinds of action. The result has been a mechanical approach and a defeat ofthe enneagramn’s purpose. In wi Preface its picture of transformation, the enneagram shows how differently na- tured processes have to build into a perfection. In ts pete of discovery, it shows how differen kinds of veil have to be progresively removed in ‘order to come to what isestental and true. This relates to the ennes. ‘ram's foundation in the ireducible idea of cosmoses: of the supersys, tem, andthe subsystem, which form a quantum whole of action, ‘The quantum whole is number 9 on the enneagram. This divides into ‘he complementarites of3 and 6, Points 3 and 6 form interfaces dividing and connecting three domains of ation, The inner lines express an inter, nal dialogue berween the three domains that comes with understanding. tis easiest to grasp the workings ofthe enneagram in terms of human enterprise, because we cn more easily acept ides of purpose an intel ‘gence in that realm than we can in the realm of natural processes, For {his reason, Ihave tended to concentrate on human endeavor. Howeven, it temains essentially true that the human being isan exemplar of the ‘whole universe and that what we can find in oureves i also true ofthe natural order As fr as posible, Ihave related my interpretations ofthe eaneagram to the statements reported of Gurdjieff by his pupil Ouspensiy. I belive weave to remain tue to the initiatives of such a great pioneer, especially ‘when we depart from them in our own journeys of discovery. Ise Gur. eff as part ofan extraordinary incursion ofa new order of peeeption {into human lif, an incursion that involved at, music, philosophy, si ence, and literature, as well a5 the occult. The word in general reacted olently to this influx, and we have suffered wars and chaos asa conse- quence. One of the most important emergent ideas of this century has been that of information. This promises to enable us to see the sameness of Aiffeent phenomena, especially the sameness between human and now- ‘human proceses. Gurdjieff did not have a concept of information, ‘through its to be found in his deep intuitions about the significance of impressions. For this reason, his teachings have been relepited to the domain ofthe occult, when thy offered important insights needed for ‘understanding our place inthe world, Ihave taken the tree categories of ‘matter, energy, and information as my reference frame. Tis isto empha- size that Gurdjiefs approach was thoroughly physic, based on the un- folding of real events. His objective science was no arrogant ploy of self.
