We will spend time in class in a variety of ways: I will do some

lecturing, together we’ll discuss the course material through
exchange of ideas, working on cases, and engaging in
experiential activities to help ensure that you understand the
wide variety of diverse issues covered in the class, have the
knowledge and skills necessary to meet the course objectives
Approach to Learning and have a complete grounding to embark upon and navigate a
career in management.
Class participation is highly valued. Appropriate participation
requires regular, on-time attendance, reading assigned material,
preparing for class activities and cases, thinking about the issues,
and taking an active part in class discussions. I expect that you
will have read the assigned material and come to class
ready to discuss it and share new ideas.
Active Learning:
Because this course relies heavily on in-class discussion, a part of
your grade will be determined from active learning through class
participation. Active learning means that you take responsibility
for your learning and for establishing a positive atmosphere.
We’ll treat the classroom experience with the same respect we
would one’s work environment, with long term relationships and
consequences in mind.
Prepare - Study the assigned material, taking care to prepare
thoroughly and to develop informed individual responses to the
questions invoked. Try to make a connection between the
readings and other course content. Assigned articles will not
always be fully reviewed separately — you are assumed to have
read and understood them, and to have thought about how they
apply to a case or various concepts. You may also be asked at
random to share an article synopsis with the class.
Participate, Contribute and Support – There will be plenty of
opportunity for you to volunteer and participate in the course. If
you do not offer thoughtful commentary, it will be assumed that
you are not prepared. That said, airtime is a scarce resource so
please use it wisely. Furthermore, you will be not be rewarded
simply for speaking up. You are encouraged to use your good
graces to interact openly with others, to support their learning
experience with excellent listening skills, to question people’s
ideas in a respectful manner, and to respond rather than react. It
is your people skills that set you apart in an organization; the
same principles exist during your advanced studies. (n.b. If you
are absent due to illness or emergency, it is your responsibility to
learn from a fellow student what you missed.)
Plug into the learning environment, not the wall – In a seminar
course such as this, where human interaction is the best learning
too please avoid lap tops.

In summary, the Active Learning component includes class

involvement and demonstration of admirable personal
leadership. Your grade will be determined by mandatory
attendance, preparation for class, your active participation in
exercises, contribution to discussions, your listening skills,
desirable people skills, and the extent to which you enable (and
Encourage) your classmates to engage. Please promote
interdependence, and help each other
