Lesson-5: Organ Systems

I. Fill in the blanks:

1. All the bones in our body together form the

skeletal system.
2. Our lungs help us to breathe.
3. There are 206 bones in our body.
4. The food in our mouth mixes with the saliva.
5. Kidney is the part of the excretory system.
6. Heart is a part of circulatory system.
7. The spinal cord connects the nerves to the
brain.
8. The kidneys remove wastes in the form of
urine.
9. The muscular system includes all the muscles
in our body.

II. Name the following:

1. The smallest unit of the body.
Cell
2. Organs that work together to carry out a
common function.
Organ system
3. Framework of bones
Skeleton
4. The body system that digests the food.
Digestive system.
5. Organ system that sends oxygen to all parts of
the body.
Circulatory system.

III. Give two examples:

1. Organ system – Digestive system, Nervous
system.
2. Sense organs – Eyes, Ear

IV. Answer the following:

1. What is the function of the excretory system?
Ans: The excretory system removes the waste
material from our bodies.
2. What is a joint?
Ans: The place where two bones meet is called a
joint.
3. What functions does the circulatory system
carry out?
Ans:
• The circulatory system carries nutrients,
oxygen, and water to every part of our body.
• It also carries away the waste and carbon
dioxide from all parts of our body.
4. How does the skeletal system help us?
Ans:
• The skeletal system gives shape and support
to our body.
• It also helps us to move. Some bones like skull
and ribcage protect the organs of a body.
5. What is an organ system? Give two examples.
Ans: Different tissues join to form organs. Two or
more organs that work together to carry out a
common function form an organ system.
Ex: Digestive system and circulatory system.
6. Describe how food is digested in our body.
Ans:
• When we take a bite of food, it mixes with the
saliva.
• Our teeth grind it into a mushy pulp. The
tongue sends the pulp down the food pipe.
• The food then enters the stomach, where
digestive juices are released to churn the food
and break it into smaller pieces.
• The food then enters the small intestine, where
the digestive juices help to completely digest it.
• The useful part of the food is absorbed here.
The remaining undigested part of the food
moves into the large intestine from where it is
released from our body through anus.
