At the age of 19 years old, a certain man called Nicholas Cruz was accused of

opening fire with an automatic rifle at his former school Marjory Stoneman Douglass High

School, located at Parklands in Florida. The firing ended the life of 17 people, 14 people who

were severely wounded, and 5 with life-threatening injuries (Johnson, 2018). After being

arrested and taken to court, he pleaded guilty and was charged with 17 counts of first-degree

murder. This incident could not have occurred if some security or preventive measures in the

school discouraged such actions from taking place. One of the preventive measures that the

Marjory Stoneman High School could have implemented to stop the attack was by

establishing an identification card policy (InqueSEOManager, 2020). Every student and

person who wants to access the school compound should present their identification card to

the guards to ensure every person in the school compound is safe. In addition, presenting an

ID at the door entrance will scare away any person having the wrong motivate inside the

school. Surveillance is also a security measure that discourages a motivated offender from

committing illegal activities. For instance, the presence of working mechanical surveillance

such as CCTVs will ensure that every action that is going on around the school is recorded,

also the offenders will be disadvantaged because they are scared of fulfilling their mission.

In my opinion, I recommend putting hefty punishment measures on anyone found

engaging in a school shooting. People fear punishment or consequences that are actively

followed, which Implies that no one will risk themselves from engaging in the school

shooting that will lead to facing the hefty punishments put in place. Investing in education

and training on the dangers of engaging in a school shooting is another recommendation that

will eliminate such vices. The teenagers, the youths, and the community at large should be

given comprehensive training that will show them the dangers of engaging in criminal

activities, the consequences of engaging in those criminal activities, and the importance of

not being on the wrong side of the law. By doing so, there will be a drop in most criminal

cases in society, and the peace of the community members will be preserved. School shooting

robs innocent students of their life and the potential of becoming among the great people in

the society. Anyone who intends to engage in school shootings should learn from the story of

Nicholas Cruz and see that there are consequences in every action.
