❑ It is used to recount a story, explain or describe something or defend an idea.

❑ It can also be hierarchical, details are given in a list, but the author indicates which

items in the list are more important than others, either from the least important to the

most important or from the most to the least important.

❑ Answers: “Which point is the most/least important?”

“Which element is crucial?”


Grammatical signals used for
Order of Importance:

central, chief, ending with, finally, finishing with, least, less, major,
main, key, lastly, most essential, least/most important, primarily,
primary, principal, secondarily, significant, more, most, first, next,
last, still, by far, even more, worse yet
Examples
“While the most basic need is physiological, workers
aspire to self-actualization as their most valued need.”

“There are many reasons to oppose the death penalty,


but the most important is that it does not deter
violent crime.”

Identify the grammatical signals found in the following sentences. Then, identify the pattern used.
1. Racism is a result of the conceited view that one race is superior to others.
2. It is by far a powerful tool in promoting hatred, fear and discrimination.
3. There is a growing advocacy in protecting humanity against it. Nonetheless, human rights watchdogs fall short
in protecting the dignity of victims.
4. Today, racism’s exploitation has been criticized; however, extreme racist groups have been accepted in few
countries.
5. Ethno-traditional struggles over resources and territories altogether encourage racial conflicts.
