Cavitation is an important consideration in pump design. When NPSHa is insufficient and pressure at pump suction is below liquid vapor pressure cavitation occurs. Due to Bernoulli principle, as liquid flow enters an eye of centrifugal pump it accelerates to high velocities and pressure falls. If pressure drops below vapor pressure (bubble point), bubble formations occur, and unplanned vaporization happens. Then through the volute pressure starts to rise, so bubbles collapse, and cavitation occurs. Cavitation results with followings - Erosion of impeller blades and casing - Vibration (destructive for bearings and mechanical seals) - Noise Please, keep following us and share our page with other chemical engineering guys to take advantage of.
