Context: For Duolingo, I decided to attempt to learn the Turkish language. The reason why I
chose Turkish is because I like the Turkish culture and admire their family values. In addition,
my sister learned to speak fluent Turkish a few years through Duolingo. One day we hope to
visit Turkey and learn more their culture.

Explanation of how the micro-learning example works
The Micro Masters Program at edX is an example of how effective microlearning can lead to
professional growth and career advancement. Through this online platform, students can take
microlearning courses that are graduate level with the flexibility of working self-paced.
Consequently, students gain skills that refine their abilities that can help them advance in the

workforce. Additionally, these can also be used to gain credits in a master’s degree program in
universities accepting the microcredits, thus reducing the time it takes to complete their
degree. It is important to emphasize, that as their program states, a completion of the Micro
Masters program does not guarantee admission to a university master’s program, nor does it
guarantee that the number of credits will be counted the same in every university. Nonetheless,
this initiative works because it provides individuals with the ability to learn new skills to meet
the current demands of an already competitive workforce and offers them a chance to use what
they have earned to complete a graduate level degree if they choose to.

*EdX also offers a micro bachelor’s program and individual Xseries courses that provide a
deeper understanding of a particular topic providing more options to their students.
