Lab – Transport Layer Services

Instructions

Part 1: Answer the question based on your understanding.

1. Why is UDP well suited as the transport layer protocol for video applications? Answer: UDP has a little
overhead
2. A client packet is received by a server. The packet has a destination port number of 161. What service is the
client requesting? Answer: SNMP

3. A client packet is received by a server. The packet has a destination port number of 143. What service is the
client requesting?
4. A client packet is received by a server. The packet has a destination port number of 110. What service is the
client requesting? Answer: IMAP

5. Why this statement is false? The Transport Control Protocol (TCP) does not keep track of segments sent to
the destination.
6. What is performed by a client when establishing communication with a server via the use of UDP at the
transport layer? Answer: The client chooses a source port number at random. Because a session is not
required for UDP, the client chooses a random source port to begin a connection. The chosen random
port number is put into the UDP header’s source field

PART 2:

In the Simulation mode, capture the packets. What is the application layer
service being requested from Server0 by PC0? Attached a screenshot of the
PDU here.
HTTPS
According to the PDU, the target port is 443, indicating that the service requested is HTTPS
