about and desoribing routines
using subject and object questions
Materials
One set of cards per group of
‘three or four students
Time
30 minutes
Preparation
‘Copy and cut up one worksheet
per group
Procedure
1 Tell students that they are going to play a question and answer game
in groups of three or four. Every student will receive four or five
cards, each one with 3 sentence written on it connected with things
that people do in the home or in their daly lives.
2 As an example, write the following on the board:
Something that people do when they go out in the evening
0
2)
3)
What.
3 Ask students to write down what they think would be the three most
popular answers. For example: Go to a bar, go for a meal, go to a disco.
Write up their suggestions on the board. Establish the three most
popular answers,
4 Elicit the question for the example sentence above: What do people
do when they go out in the evening?
5 Explain that each card will have a similar sentence beginning either with
something of with someone. Make it clear to students that someone
‘means @ type of person or the ttle ofa job, not a person's name.
6 Give each group their pile of sixteen cards face down. Each student
should take four or five cards, think about the most popular answers
for each sentence, write his/her three answers underneath the
sentence, then write the question. Allow seven to ten minutes.
7 When students have finished writing their questions, they should
check them with you.
8 Students now play the game. In turn, they ask the questions on their
cards. The first student asks the student on his/her left. If this
student gives one of the three answers on the card, he/she gets a
point. Then the next student has @ chance to answer, and so on until
the three answers on the card have been found (or until each student
has had three guesses). Every answer that matches an answer on the
question card receives a point. The student with the most points at
the end wins,

‘ell the students to find out more information by asking you
questions with Who..?
~ Give out the worksheets. Allow the students time to read the
statements and tick any that are true for them.
~ Divide the students into pairs and get them to exchange
their worksheets. They write questions with Who..? about
the statements that their partner has ticked. Monitor and
check that students are forming their questions accurately,
~ When students have prepared their questions, they ask
and answer in their pairs. Encourage them to ask follow-up
questions.
— At the feedback stage, get students to report back anything
interesting they found out about each other.Who?
1 Tick v the statements that are true for you.

subject and object questions
Say the right thing
Target language: subject and object questions
Activity type: group quiz
When to use: Use this activity after Lesson 7.1.
Time taken: 20 minutes
Photocopy and cut up one worksheet for each group of four students in the
Procedure
Divide the class into groups of four. Within each group, students work in pairs. Give each
group a set of cards, face down.
One student in each group picks up a card but does not show it to anyone. He/she must
elicit the answers on the cards by asking his/her partner questions but he/she must not
say any of the words in the answers. E.g. Ifthe answer on the card is Spain, the student
might ask Which country won the World Cup in 2010? f the answer is not guessed with the
first question, the student must continue to ask questions until the answer is finaly given.
Each pair has one minute to try to elict all three answers on the card, the other pair should
time them. When the minute has finished, the pair receive one point for each number of
answers guessed correctly.
One student in the other pair now picks up a card and takes one minute to el
answers on the card from his/her partner.
The pairs take it in turns until all the cards have been used. The pair with the highest
number of points wins.
