Introduction
With the launch of the Windows® 7 operating system, consumers and businesses will be
looking for the latest software and devices for their Windows-based PCs. The Windows 7
Logo Program is the best way for your products to easily be identified as being compatible
and reliable with Windows 7.

The goals of the Windows 7 Logo Program are to:

• Help customers easily identify software and devices that have passed

Microsoft-designed testing for compatibility and reliability with Windows 7.

• Enable your company to differentiate your offerings while giving
customers confidence in the products that they choose.

• Reduce barriers to acquiring new applications and devices, and migrating
to Windows 7 from other operating systems.

As a participant in the Windows 7 Logo Program, your company can use logo artwork,
messaging guidelines, and assets in association with products that have met program
requirements. These assets allow you to take advantage of Microsoft’s continued
investment in promoting products that carry a Windows logo to consumers, businesses,
and retail channel partners. To use these assets, you must participate in the Windows 7
Logo Program and accept the terms of the applicable Windows Logo License Agreement
at http://winqual.microsoft.com. The product(s) that you plan to advertise or distribute
with these assets must be licensed under the applicable Logo License Agreement (LLA)
and meet program requirements.

To help drive purchase preference for “Compatible with Windows 7” products,

Microsoft will generate awareness through Web advertising and retail point-of-sale (POS)
materials. Customers will learn about the features and benefits of “Compatible with
Windows 7” products from trained retail sales professionals, on Windows.com, and on
the Windows Compatibility Center site.

This guide is designed to help your company use the applicable logo and product mes-
saging that confidently communicates the benefits of the “Compatible with Windows 7”
logo. If you have any questions about using these assets, please send an e-mail message
to WLPbrand@microsoft.com.

Referring to Windows® 7

• Never refer to the product simply as 7. Always include “Windows” in the product name.

• Never abbreviate Windows 7 as Win, Win7, or W7.

• The first time that Windows 7 is mentioned in body copy, include the properly placed registered
trademark symbol and a reference to the product as an operating system—that is,
“the Windows® 7 operating system.”

• You may use the name “Windows 7” referentially in headlines and headings as long as the full
name of the Windows 7 operating system is provided at the first mention in body copy.

• When Windows 7 is referenced in any materials, include the following attribution of Microsoft
ownership of the Windows trademark:Windows is a trademark of the Microsoft group of companies.

• Do not refer to applications that work with Windows 7 as Windows 7 applications. Instead, refer
to them as “applications for Windows 7” or “applications that work with Windows 7.”

• Use “Windows 7–based” when referring to the platform in relationship to a PC—for example,
“use this product with a Windows 7–based laptop,” not a Windows 7 laptop. An additional option is
to use the phrase “a laptop running Windows 7.”

• Never use Windows 7 in the plural form. For example, do not say “there are three Windows 7s left
on the shelf.” Instead, say “there are three units of the Windows 7 operating system left on the shelf.”

• Never use Windows 7 in the possessive, as in “Windows 7’s security features are impressive.”
Instead, say “the security features of Windows 7 are impressive.”

Using the Windows trademark

The first time that Windows is mentioned in body copy, and it is not part of the Windows 7
trademark, include the ® symbol after Windows, as in the following examples: Windows® Photo
Gallery, Windows® Media Center, Windows® Flip 3D, and the Windows® operating system.
One notable placement exception is in Windows Media® Player.
