Topic: Limits
II. Objectives:
a. Familiarized with the intuitive concept of limit
b. Explained the formal definition of limits
c. Performed methods of calculating limits; and
d. Solved for one-sided limits.
Example 1
x2 −1
Let f(x)= and find lim ¿x → 1 f (x)¿.
x−1
f(x) at x=1 is not defined
Simplify algebraically;
x2 −1 (x +1)( x −1)
f(x)= = = x+1 (for all x≠ 1¿
x−1 x−1
Taking values of x very nearly equal to but not equal to 1 will be given by this table:
For several reasons, lim ¿x → a f (x) ¿ might not exist. Consider three cases.
1
lim ¿x → 0 does not exist ¿
x
2. The limit of f(x) may assume different values when x approaches a from different directions.
Example 3
x2
Find lim ¿x → 0 √ ¿.
x
Recall that by definition √ x 2 = |x| ; this allows you to rewrite the given function:
√ x 2 =|x| =
x x {−11 when x>0
when x< 0
The limit of x approaches 0 depends on how x approaches 0.
Approaching x=0 through positive values, the limit is 1.
Approaching x=0 through negative values, the limit is -1.
This means that if we are given a small interval ( L−ε ,+ ε ) centered at L , then we can find a (small ) inte
such that for all x ≠ a in ( a−δ , a+δ ), f ( x ) is in (L−ε , L+ ε ).
Example 5
A basic consideration of lim ¿x → a ¿ f(x) is whether or not x=a is in the domain of f(x).
A. If f(a) is defined
If x=a is in the domain of f(x), and a is not an endpoint of the domain, and if f(x) is defined by
a single expression, then
lim ¿x → a ¿ f(x) = f(a)
Example 6
Solution:
lim ¿x → 1 ¿ (x+3)= 1+3= 4
Example 7

lim ¿x → 1 = = ¿
x+2 1+2 3
g ( x)
If f(x)= , with lim ¿x → a ¿ h(x)= 0 and lim ¿x → a ¿ g(x)≠ 0 , then lim ¿x → a ¿ f(x) doesn’t exist.
h(x )

( x 2−1)
3
g ( x)
If f(x)= , with lim ¿x → a ¿ g(x)=lim ¿x → a ¿ h(x)¿ 0 , then the limit as x approaches a may or not
h(x )
exist.
Example 9
( x2 −4 )
Find lim ¿ x →2 ¿
(x −2)
Solution:
x2 −4
= x+2
x −2
( x 2−4 )
Therefore , the lim ¿ x→ 2 =4 ¿
(x−2)
ONE-SIDED LIMITS
The right-hand limit of f (x), as x approaches a, equals L
written: x→ alim
+¿
f (x)= L¿
¿
if we can make the value f (x) arbitrarily close to L by taking x to be sufficiently close to the right of a.
