Topic: Will the NEP control India Brain Drain?

Summary:

1) The NEP 2020 announced by Ministry of Education, is a welcome move for the countrymen.
It emphasizes on holistic multidisciplinary education for future nation’s stakeholders . This
reform was long pending and it came after 35 years. The brain drain refers to the concept of
emigration of highly trained or qualified people from a particular country. This NEP 2020
might be a step in the right direction to control the situation by improving skillset through
quality education in the country.

2) The Indian education system has had many loopholes. For example, the insularity of a
particular stream from the others really limited the broader perspective of a student. This
NEP aims to remove that insularity by letting the students choose the subjects irrespective of
the stream. This will really help in having a holistic development.

3) A lot of the students move to western countries in search for quality education and stay
there for jobs leading to brain drain. As per the NEP, the foreign varsities can set up their
units in India. This will help a lot of students in the country to improve their skillset. This will
help in retaining talent.

4) Internationalization of Higher Education is added first time to Education policy of India. It

targets on creating India as a knowledge hub attracting foreign nationals and to promote
research collaboration and student exchanges between Indian institutions and global
institutions through organised efforts. Exchange of Credits between foreign universities and
home institutes will be permitted, to be counted for the award of a degree in appropriation
as per HEI. This is a multi-beneficiary significant reform that should benefit in seamless
education. This will also help in controlling brain drain.

5) This NEP is a step in the right direction to control brain drain. But brain drain is not
associated with quality of education only. Many reforms in the work sector like proper
payment policy, tax reforms & better working conditions are also needed to retain the
talent. NEP if implemented properly will help in developing skillset and if there are
complementary benefits from reforms in the work sector, this will help in controlling the
brain drain.
