Title: Microbiology in Nursing Practice

Date :September 1 ,2017

Microbiology is the state of study that examines the small organism that are
visible to our naked eye .With microbiology we become more aware about the small organism
that is present on our food ,body as well as on our surroundings . It identifies the isolation and
diagnosis and treatment of pathogenic microorganism and also produces beneficial organism
such as yeast and some antibiotics . In medicine alone, microbiologists have contributed to
some of history's most important scientific breakthroughs. Edward Jenner invented the world’s
first smallpox vaccine. Robert Koch identified the causes of cholera, tuberculosis and anthrax.
Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. And, more recently, Barry Marshall identified the link
between Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach ulcers. Microbiologists are pushing the
envelope of science and helping to save lives in the process.

According to the authors of this article nurses must have sufficient education
and training in microbiology to perform many roles within clinical nursing practice .That wants to
imply unto us that microbiology plays an important role on our society , that without it we
wouldn’t be aware about the different microorganism that are present on us and wouldn’t
identify the viruses , bacteria that is invading our body . Because everyday nurses’ encounter
with microbial world while working in medical health care settings. They are engaged in
managing all aspects of out-patient’s health and infection control in the hospitals. The microbial
world is integral part of the healthcare settings. With enough knowledge in microbiology it really
serves as the big help because on our field we provide services to aid the diagnosis and
management of infectious diseases and help ensure the safety of those at risk of acquiring
infectious diseases, both in hospitals and the community.

This gives us some knowledge about some precaution that we need to do

most especially on our field , that we encounter different people on our workplace for us to fulfill
our duties on our patients . Microbiology in nursing education helps us in order to effectively
prevent and recognize healthcare-acquired infections . And also protects us from disease
transmission and prevention is critical . Nurses should have known about the mode of spread of
infection. This knowledge would help us for us to look for specific control of the spread of
infection. Understanding of medical microbiology would help us to understand the difference
between the causative organism of disease and patient . We also play an important role in

immunization to control threats of various diseases. It is our duty to ensure the atmosphere of
the operation theatre is free of microorganisms.  The principles of asepsis are also based on
microbiology. The proper disposal of biomedical waste is equally important and knowledge of
microbiology helps in this field also. The nurse must recognize the importance of the proper
collection of specimens to be sent for bacteriological examination to obtain accurate results.
One of the most important things is hand washing which helps in reducing surgical infections
and transmission of diseases in hospitals. Nurses also play an important role in immunization to
control threats of various diseases. She/he follows not only aseptic techniques but also uses
sterile equipment while looking after such patients. It is the duty of a nurse to ensure that the
atmosphere of the operation theatre is free of microorganisms. The nurse can play a role while
the female needs antenatal care, help during delivery or after giving birth for six weeks called as
puerperium. A nurse must have sound knowledge of the sterilization methods and controls of
sterilization so that good quality could be maintained while providing nursing care . A nurse
must learn to identify these bacteria so that appropriate medicines could be given to the patient
and treatment is done accordingly. Bacteria usually tend to adapt themselves with the change in
environment and resist some antibiotics or may be sensitive to other antibiotics. The knowledge
of microbiology helps in treatment with suitable antibiotics. Microbiology helps a nursing
professional to understand the basic concepts of reproduction, morphology, biochemical
characteristics and genetics. Microbiology makes aware about new diseases and modern
molecular identification methods. The role of microorganism in development of certain
medications and vaccinations cannot be ignored either. That’s how understanding
microorganism is very important to us .

This research have data base that is very timely because this article was made last September
7,2017 happened 5 years ago . That this research are organized collection of the computerized
collection or data .

The material is feasible to actual client care because the idea that we get
on this article can be used to our future profession on our field . It can be a stepping stone for us
to have a better background in caring our future clients . All the data that we’ve learn from this
article are very relevant and appropriate most especially when it comes to the patient care .
Health and safety of patients are very important into our hands , for the reason that we are the
one who hands on our patients and put their trust into our bare hands . It tackles on how we
should communicate with our patients because patients need personal attention and through
communication about their health. Health concerns often cause a great deal of anxiety among

patients and their family members. In some cases, health issues are life
altering.  Understanding as much as possible about what is happening with your body, why
particular procedures are being performed, and what to expect during and after any procedure
can allay some of that anxiety, so it is important to find health care providers who take the time
to answer all of your questions and educate you about your health and your care options. health
care providers must see their patients as human beings first.  A provider who communicates not
only information, but also compassion, can make a tremendous difference in how a patient
experiences care. Health care professionals who deliver outstanding customer service are
mindful on a day-to-day basis that each patient is a person living with a unique set of
circumstances, not just a box to check or a puzzle to solve.  They make the effort to understand
what their patients are experiencing, treat them with empathy, and help them to feel as
comfortable as possible.

Nursing care plans helps to identify the unique role of nurses in

attending the overall health and well-being of clients without having to rely entirely on a
physician’s orders or intervention. It allows the nurse to think critically about each client
and to develop interventions that are directly tailored to the individual . Serves as guide
for assigning a specific staff to a specific client. There are instances when client’s care
needs to be assigned to a staff with particular and precise skills. The medical record is
used by the insurance companies to determine what they will pay in relation to the
hospital care received by the client. RN uses a systematic, dynamic way to collect and
analyze data about a client, the first step in delivering nursing care. Assessment includes
not only physiological data, but also psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and
life-style factors as well. For example, a nurse’s assessment of a hospitalized patient in
pain includes not only the physical causes and manifestations of pain, but the patient’s
response—an inability to get out of bed, refusal to eat, withdrawal from family members,
anger directed at hospital staff, fear, or request for more pain mediation. Based on the
assessment and diagnosis, the nurse sets measurable and achievable short- and long-
range goals for this patient that might include moving from bed to chair at least three
times per day; maintaining adequate nutrition by eating smaller, more frequent meals;
resolving conflict through counseling, or managing pain through adequate medication.
Nursing care is implemented according to the care plan, so continuity of care for the
patient during hospitalization and in preparation for discharge needs to be assured. Care
is documented in the patient’s record. Both the patient’s status and the effectiveness of
the nursing care must be continuously evaluated, and the care plan modified as needed.

This article increases our knowledge when it comes on our future
profession such as giving us a background how really microbiology amazing is , makes
people life more easier when it comes to identifying different microorganism that
surrounds us . Microbiology is actually one of the most important sub-sectors of
biology. By analyzing microorganisms up close, microbiologists play a crucial role in
combating disease, creating chemical products for agriculture, and even helping to
keep the planet healthy. Microbiology is an integral part of nursing studies and is
significant part of nursing profession. It provides the basic foundation to the nursing
profession. The successful implementation of the microbiology in nursing profession is
an indicator of deep understanding of interaction of microbial world with human beings.
And to us nurses helps us in order for us to make our selves aware on the different
phases that we are going to face on our field .
