TUBING FUN
Perkinstown is a destination for winter time fun.
As the saying goes, when life hands you lemons, you should make lemonade.
In northcentral Wisconsin, we have snow. Lots of snow. In a good year, we
measure our snow in feet. In a really good year, we use a yardstick.
In addition to snow, Taylor County also has an abundance of hills. The hills are
what are left from the last ice age, tens of thousands of years ago.
While flatlanders may have to be content with building snow people with their
excess white stuff, the combination of rugged hills and snow lends itself to all
sorts of fun opportunities in the area.
Taylor County’s premier public winter fun zone is Perkinstown Winter Recre-
ation Area located on Wintersports Road in central Taylor County.
Take Hwy 64 west of Medford for about 15 miles and then head north on Win-
ter Sports Road, a town road that winds through Taylor County’s famous glacial
terrain. Go north for about 4.5 miles and watch for the signs. Two parking facilities
provide plenty of off-road parking for the sports area.
The upper parking lot looks out over the newly remodeled chalet and a series
of accessible earth ramps makes for an easy descent to the building.

The Perkinstown Winter Sports area began as a
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project. It was a
major project in what is now the Chequamegon-Nic-
olet National Forest located about halfway between
Medford and Gilman.
At the time it was built, the CCC had been charged
with developing winter recreation in national forests,
a policy that later changed to emphasizing summer
recreation.
After the CCC left, operation of the area bounced
around. A number of private businesses leased and
operated the Perkinstown Winter Sports area, but
none were successful.
Then in 1951, Glen Ogle had an idea. At the time,
Ogle was a sophomore at Hannibal High School. He
suggested to his science class that they could raise
money by running the recreation area. The class long steps to get to the top of the 65-foot rise, or they
