POWERPOINT DISCOURSE

The title of our project is “Quality Value Addition for Socio-Economic Transformation
through Integrated Poultry Farming in Africa”.

Inclusive development in Africa is on the rise and this progress is attributed to the
agricultural sector. The sector’s contribution to poverty reduction was rated at 76 percent in
2013. Nonetheless, long working hours are needed for agricultural output to meet home and
international demand. The rural areas are experiencing an increase in population, but surveys
have revealed shortages in the supply of poultry products especially eggs as the people depend
on delivery from the bigger cities. A good example is the case of the Bui Division in the North
West Region of Cameroon whose egg supply comes from Bamenda town.

The business is going to be centered on an integrated farm with primary focus to boost the
protein-nutrient intake for the peasant population. For more socio-economic impact, Maize and
vegetable cultivation will accompany poultry farming which is the main activity. This will help
us to optimally valorize the available resources since output from one sector will serve as input
for another. We will also transform and store some of the output in order to minimize post-
harvest losses.

The general objective of the project is to add value for socio-economic transformation of the
living standards of the rural population through optimal valorization of resources along the
value-chain of an integrated poultry farm. Specifically, the project shall seek to:

 Construct an integrated poultry farm house and accompanying infrastructures.

 Increase protein-nutrient intake of the population through rearing of layer birds that will
lay at least 2000 eggs daily.
 Incorporate seasonal cropping, processing/transformation and marketing for vegetables
and maize.
 Create employment and generate income through organized marketing of farm products
to avoid losses.
 Improve on the members’, employees’ and other farmers’ knowledge of agricultural
production through capacity building trainings.

In order to manage and ensure sustainability, we shall adopt the Integrated Farm Manage-
ment (IFM) approach which is a site-specific farm business approach that uses the best of mod-

ern technology and traditional methods. This will be coupled with the setting of committees,
notably:

1) A Technical Committee (TC) to oversee and ensure the smooth day-to-day operations
of the projects.
2) An Internal follow-up team to ensure that all activities carried out are in conformity
with the stated objectives and synchronized with the chronogram. The team follows up
with progress and reports periodically with recommendations for corrective actions.
3) An Advisory Team to investigate and provide relevant technical advice on equipment
and technology. They also carry out and submit periodic reviews of progress .
4) An Executive Bureau (EB) to monitor project activities, ensuring that risk mitigation
measures are implemented and that expected results are obtained with emphasis on
quality.

As concerns our activities,

Oku is one of the sub divisions within the Bui Division, situated some 76KM from the
regional capital, Bamenda and access is through rough and rugged roads. The sub division is
made up of 36 villages with a population of about 88.000, several tourist sites, schools, hospitals,
just to name a few. Surveys reveal that there is no poultry farmer in the village who has ventured
into the rearing of layer birds and the population, which has become cosmopolitan, revert to the
locally cultivated vegetables for their protein-nutrient intake, a source which will not sufficiently
meet their Dietary Reference Intake of 0.8grams per Kg of body weight. This makes the demand
for other protein sources very high and opens a wonderful opportunity for a project to produce
table eggs in the area since the current supply is from other parts of the country. It also presents a
good marketing opportunity for vegetables both online and offline.

Maize on its part remains a staple food for many communities in the country, being
cultivated both traditionally and industrially. This sector has also been experiencing
shortages in supply as the demand keeps rising and Cameroon still imports corn for her local
industries, especially those of the brewery sector.

In a bid to resolve the nutritional intake problem, this venture, which is co-founded by a
Nutritional Scientist, a senior agricultural engineer and a business development specialist seeks
to build a large scale integrated farm which will produce and market about 2.000 eggs daily, fish,
maize, animal products and vegetables which can be transformed and packaged differently for a
local meat-kit. The project will seek the technical expertise of the veterinary service of the Sub
Division for disease prevention and treatment.

Our farming methods shall include the deep liter/battery cage systems for egg production,
fish pond for aquaculture and crop rotation for the vegetable farms.

The project has as purpose to:

 Improve the livelihood of the local population with emphasis on those in the rural areas.

2
 Secure returns on investments
 Promote sustainable land use for the protection of ecological chains

The project shall have both economic, social and environmental impact. SWOT analysis have
also been carried out to assess the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of the
project.

There shall be two farming sessions per year to ensure that there is sufficient stock of maize
and vegetables to meet both the poultry and market needs. The Maize and Vegetables shall be
planted in the months of March and August in order to ensure all year round availability that will
meet the demand. At the poultry farm, the first set of chicks shall be received in the 3rd month
after the start of the project. They are expected to start laying from the 6th to the 20th months.
The second set of chicks will be brought in during the 15th month so that by the time the first set
are spent, the second set will start laying. This will ensure continuous supply of eggs.

As regards the market channels, we will do both direct sales and multi-level sales. A lot of
producer to consumer marketing will be done for the local population who will buy at farm gate
prices. But to the surrounding areas, the producer-wholesaler-retailer-consumer channel will be
best. It will be easier in the offline market to get in touch with wholesalers and supermarkets who
will buy in large quantities and sell to retailers who intend sell to the consumers of our farm
products. Nonetheless, we will do online marketing to capture customers who shop online by
creating an online platform which will facilitate taking of orders. Considerations are being made
for home delivery.

Financially, As per our estimates, we have:

 Total fixed cost = $20110USD

 Total depreciation = $2713USD
 Total running cost = $55444USD
 Labour = $8000USD for 20 months, giving us a
TOTAL EXPENDITURE = $84054USD

Concerning income, our expectations are that Income be raised from the sale of eggs, spent
birds, manure, maize, vegetables. We estimated a

TOTAL EXPECTED INCOME = $100505USD,

3
NET PROFIT = $13738USD

40% of the net profit ($5495.2USD) will serve as ploughed-back profit and the remaining
60% ($8242.8USD) will be profit for the group.

In anticipation to upscale and as the conditions prove favorable, we look forward to

introducing non-ruminants, aquaculture, large ruminants, more fish ponds and a ultimately, a
biogas plant.

Consequently, we will be doing well and doing good at the same time.
