What is History?

Directions:
This semester, it is important that you critically think about history and history making. This
assignment is your opportunity to analyze the question, "What is history?". Read Chapter 1 and 2
and skim the contents of the other chapters covered this semester. Write a 1 page essay
(organized, double spaced, open citation style; for example you can use Chicago, or APA, just
stay consistent), responding to the posed questions regarding American history:
What is history? Who defines it? Who shapes it? How do we really know what we know
about history? Do you think there are multiple interpretations of history? If so, why? How
does the author of the textbook approach American history? In your opinion, what are the
challenges and opportunities of historical writing and research? can you connect your
position about history to modern America? (Please answer them all.)
Use points from chapter 1 and 2 in the book to help support your perspectives and views. Take
time and think about these questions, I want to hear YOUR interpretations. Have fun.
