1. Identify and explain which of the 5S has helped improved Toyota ‘s performance and how.
- Behind Toyota’s success was a lot of trials and hardships in their company. Back in
the early 1990’s, they faced acute labor shortage resulting to strained work atmosphere
as the workers were reportedly burned-out. Because of this, they realize to make
changes on their production management and human resource management practices.
For me, ‘STANDARDIZE’ (Seiketsu) helped improved their performance and cope up
with the difficulty that their company faced. As further stated in the definition,
standardize refers to making all the cleaning, control and improvement process a
customary activity in the workplace, allowing for control and consistency. This means
that Honda decided to change everything in their system and their workplace. They
control the work done by the employees to avoid over working and made a system that
improves the quality of work their employees exert in working.
Standardize also means having a healthy work environment. Workers are now
protected and is having a healthy environment, less harm for them and a good
workplace to be with. With the past challenges that Toyota faced, they realized that
employees are very important than anything else in a company.
Standardization also requires all employees to respect organizations policies and
adhere to rules and regulations. I really do believe that Toyota used this among the 5’s
because they faced a major problem within their company but they regained easily and
became one of the most competitive companies in the world. This is because they
trained their employees to follow organizational policies and adhere to rules and
regulations.
Toyota’s success was the fruit of hardship and wise thinking of the company head.
They decided to act and heal their company on time. They made work practices
consistent and standardise that’s why they are at their position right now. They made
the past challenge as their inspiration to make their company a healthy workplace and a
successful one.
