Academic Reflection 02

As an undergraduate student in BCS, I was required to follow the Buddhism and Social Work

course taught by Mr.Billy Loh. This new course opened my mind to think about various aspects

of social work. I learned that social work can be defined as a profession and social workers are

rendering an incomparable service to the society

In the last few weeks, I acquired much knowledge about social work, history and origin and

development of social work, role of a social worker, and the helping process which is very

helpful when someone is asking assistance from a social worker. There are six steps.

The first one is Engagement, during this stage, the social worker makes initial contact with the

clients and begin to establish the framework of the helping relationship. Second one is

Assessment, during this phase, the social worker gathers information from the client and

sometimes from other people close to the client. Third one is planning, during this stage, clients

and social workers secure their relationship through the development of a contract that may be

formal or informal. Fourth one is implementation, during this stage both the client and the social

worker are working towards the goals that are set. Constantly checking in and reassessing. The

fifth one is Evaluation, after the implementation, it is followed by an evaluation of how well the

intervention has been to the clients problem. The last one is Termination, it is the process where

the client and the social worker mutually determine when and how the helping relationship will

end. If I were a social worker in profession, I would have to follow these steps. After the class, I

was more curious on this topic and I went through internet to find further information.
In the last week, I learned social and social work theory, Domains for understanding human

behaviour which can be categorised in to five domains; Biological, Psychological, Emotional,

Behavioural, Environmental. Under the focus, I studied the general system theory including the

concept.
