Management thought was developed due to the contributions of many intellectuals who have different

background. These contributions have not been suitably and adequately integrated to give a unified theory
of management.
There are many approaches in management thought. Each approach tries to explain the nature and content
of management separately and has different beliefs and views.
 In these contexts I provide the following recommendation regarding the different approaches
of management for formulating the organization structure.
1. Classical Approach:
The organization should follow classical approaches of management if it has the following major
features.
 If it is concentrates on anatomy of formal organization through division of labor, specialization,
structure, scalar, functional processes and span of control.
 If the experiences are studied and certain generalizations are deducted there from, these will help
the practicing managers.
 If it have a closed system.
 Formal organization structure coordinates the activities of the organization. They ignored the
element of human beings.
 Principles and functions of management have universal application.
 If it emphasized efficiency of lower levels of organizations.
 Work force were supposed to be rational economic force, they could be motivated through
economic incentives.
 Classical approach emphasized on ‘centralization of authority’.
This school is based on the close study of past managerial experience and cases, so formal education
and training is needed for developing managerial skills.
2. Neoclassical Theory of Management
