I think they were fairly standard by the 1980s, it varied a bit earlier. From
memory the most common ones were:

Red - stop signals (including shunting signals), mechanical slots.

Yellow - distant signals.

Black - mechanical points

Blue - mechanical facing point locks

Black/blue (half and half, black at the bottom) - self-locking motor points.

Red/yellow - stop signal with auto-distant

Brown - ground frame releases, gate releases.

Brown/red - direction levers (single lines)

Black with white chevrons - detonator placers (chevrons point up or down as


appropriate to line)

White - spare.

Levers for electrically operated equipment (motor points, clour light signals etc)
were cut down to half height to stop you taking a two-handed swing. Lever handles
could be natural steel or white plastic-covered, the latter was popular on the LMR.

There are a few others for more specialised equipment; green for example which was
for King levers and some other bits I never had any dealings with.
