NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA

FIRE BALLISTIC MISSILES AS
TENSIONS RISE ON THE PENINSULA

2012
The South Korean government
assessed that North Korea could
have between 2,500 and 5,000
tons of chemical weapons,
potentially one of the largest
stockpiles in the world.
2017
On 3rd September 2017, North
Korea conducted by far its
largest nuclear test to date, at
its Punggye-ri test site.

2017

North Korea claimed this test was

its first thermonuclear weapon - the
most potent form of nuclear
explosion where an atomic
detonation is boosted by a
secondary fusion process to
produce a far bigger blast.
2018

In April 2018, North Korea

announced it would suspend
further nuclear tests because its
capabilities had been "verified".

2018

North Korea also promised to

dismantle the Punggye-ri site and in
May 2018 blew up some of the
tunnels in the presence of foreign
journalists - but with no
international experts.
2020
In October 2020, North
Korea unveiled its new
ballistic missile.

2020

It is believed to be able to
deliver a nuclear warhead to
anywhere in the US, and its size
had surprised even seasoned
analysts when it was put on
show in 2020.
2021
In January 2021, North Korea
unveiled another missile - a new
type of submarine-launched
ballistic missile which it declared
to be "the world's most powerful
weapon".

2021

South Korea has increased its own

missile capacity in recent weeks,
including a test of a ballistic missile
launched from a submarine on
Wednesday, September 15th.
BREAKING NEWS

Although analysts say these latest missile tests are

a way for the North Koreans to get attention of the

Biden administration, they are also concerned that

it could be part of an accelerating arms race with

South Korea, something that could get worse.

BACKGROUND

Tensions between South Korea and the North

remained high after the Korean War, exacerbated by

such incidents as the assassination attempt on Park

Chung-Hee by North Korean commandos in 1968, the

bombing in Rangoon in 1983, and the North’s

destruction by time bomb of a South Korean airliner

over the Thai-Burmese border in 1987.
