Chapter 1: Discussion Questions

1 Climate change: Green movement has become more prevalent.Globalization can change the way
employees are trained in an organization. People are now able to attend courses abroad in order to
prepare themselves for a higher position. Change in demographics in an organization could heavily
influence problem resolution and communication in an organization. For example, interactions
between millennials and baby boomers could see a clash of ideals and a small issue that could have
been resolved easily between people of the same generation could become a big issue, all due to
different perspectives of reality and different styles of communication.

2 The priority given to certain things, such as saying the word “bomb” or the long security checks,
might have received mixed feedback from those that received the message, in other words, the
public. This might also be a sort of “noise” in the process as, perhaps, the message national security
might have wanted to send was that security had been increased for the population’s safety, whereas
some people might see it as an unnecessary hindrance to the process of traveling. I would say there
might be more effective ways, seeing how security checks manage to overlook things. Is the current
system effective? Perhaps more effective than systems before 9/11.

3 Global organizations, a more prevalent go-green movement, an increase in contingent work, easily
replaceable employees. Global organizations are necessary in order for organizations to be able to
expand and also make their services accessible to different countries, which, depending on the type of
service, would benefit said countries. Go-green movement would be beneficial, ultimately, to the
whole world. Contingent work would be necessary for people who would prefer to work that way in
order to attain experience from different organizations. On the other hand, contingent work is
detrimental to people who would prefer stability.

4 Rhetoric can be used to appease citizens in times of stress and still manage to attract their
cooperation in order to be able to better navigate the situation. This was relevant in situations such as
in natural disasters or when crime is prevalent. The sociopsychological approach can be useful in
international affairs to help ease conflict management.

Chapter 14: Case in Point

1 Some of them have worked at companies for almost 20 years and have become what the text
defines as the “organization man”, that is, a person who has high loyalty to the organization and is
taken care of by the organization. Some of them have had different jobs due to age and being
replaceable as the text states. In this sense, they do not feel loyalty to the job and the only tie to the
job would be the money.

2 For most of them the high reliance of the job on technology has been more of a challenge than an
aid.

3 All of them work at organizations that have them working with people from different cultures, this
can sometimes be a challenge in regards to language.

4 Some have been laid off due to the company going bankrupt. Some decided to work on freelancing
but faced many challenges.

5 The organization man mentioned earlier is not happy with their work situation seeing how the
organization does not appreciate their extra effort and sees it as a given that they should do all the
tasks they fulfill and not being paid for. For others, they do not feel comfortable with their precarious
work situation.
