Module Four
Shear and Moment in Beam
Overview
In this module, you will know the principles and fundamentals of springs and
shear and moment in beams.
Read and study the self-paced learning material entitled “SPLM#4 SHEAR&
MOMENT IN BEAMS” which is uploaded on the Moodle: ES 228 MECHANICS
OF DEFORMABLE BODIES
1. Helical Springs
2. Deformation
3. Springs in series
4. Springs in parallel
5. Statistically Determinate Beams
6. Statistically Indeterminate Beams
7-10. Types of loading and their definition.
ASK #1: De
TASK #2: Solve problems involving springs.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Instructions: Analyze and solve the following problems. Enclose your final answer
in a box. (10 pts each)
1. A close coiled helical spring of 10 cm men diameter is made up of 1 cm diameter rod and
has 20 turns. The spring carries an axial load of 200 N. Determine the shearing stress.
Taking the value of Modulus of Rigidity = 8.4 x 10^4 N/mm^2, determine the deflection
when carrying this load. Also calculate the stiffness of the spring and the frequency of
free vibration for a mass hanging from it.
2. Compute the maximum shearing stress developed in phosphor bronze spring having
mean diameter of 200 mm and consisting of 24 turns of 20 mm diameter wire when the
spring is stretched 100 mm. Use A.M. Wahl’s formula and G=42 GPa.
3. Compute the maximum shearing stress developed in a phosphor bronze spring having
diameter of 200 mm and consisting of 24 turns of 200-mm-diameter wire when the
spring is stretched 100 mm. Use and G = 42 GPa.
4. A helical spring is fabricated by wrapping wire ¾ in. in diameter around a forming
cylinder 8 in. in diameter. Compute the number of turns required to permit an
elongation of 4 in. without exceeding a shearing stress of 18 ksi. Use Eq. (3-9) and G = 12
× 10^6 psi.
5. Two close-coiled concentric helical springs of the same wire, circular in cross-section
and supports a compressive load P. The inner spring consists of 20 turns of mean
diameter 16 cm and the outer spring has 18 turns of mean diameter 20 cm. Calculate the
maximum stress produced in each spring if the diameter of wire= 1 cm and P=1000N.
