Activity 2 : Assessment Under the New Normal: 5 Major Changes

What do you think about the changes brought about by the new normal on the conduct
of classroom assessments that were mentioned in the video? How should a teacher deal with the
challenges brought about by remote or distance learning on student ...

Students, teachers, and parents are adjusting into the "new normal" for the coming years
as schools throughout the world have closed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic (and
many have extended closures for the rest of the school year). Many schools are putting in place
their distance learning contingency plans (some of which were just put in place lately), and using
online platforms and technologies to link students and teachers. During certain hours, national
and local governments partner with broadcasting service providers to offer instructional
programming via television and radio. Teachers and parents have had to swiftly adjust to teaching
in this new environment in order to ensure that children are engaged in learning.
Learning assessment is a critical feedback mechanism in education, allowing all students
in the learning process to understand what is being taught and where further learning resources
are needed. Depending on the aim of the assessment, several modalities may be used. Formative
assessment, like high-stakes exams and large-scale assessments, is typically done in the classroom
by instructors as part of the teaching process and includes anything from teacher observation to
constant feedback to assignments. Formative assessment is very important for determining each
student's learning requirements and providing training appropriately. Furthermore, teachers
frequently use summative exams to measure the extent to which students met expected learning
goals and gained essential information and abilities.
Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, all forms of learning assessment relied heavily on students'
physical presence, whether for administration or to monitor their daily progress. Due to recent
school closures, new ways to provide the crucial feedback function of learning evaluation are
needed. While all types of student learning assessment are important, formative assessment is
especially important right now because learning must take place outside of the physical classroom,
and teachers and parents-turned-teachers must know whether students are absorbing content
delivered in formats that are different from business as usual. One of the most difficult aspects of
remote learning was meeting the requirements of all students. There is such a vast range of
preparedness levels, language skills, and backgrounds in any one school. In many areas, the
pandemic has worsened inequalities. Teachers, on the other hand, did not allow this deter them
from doing everything they could to fulfill the requirements of their pupils.
