The focus of this lesson are German prepositions, part 1.

"And if the customer has a question about the product?"

In this lesson we've seen quite a lot of different prepositions. As you're


becoming more and more familiar with German, you should start working on
mastering the fine points of German grammar. Using the right case with each
preposition is one of those things. It's not vital to being understood, but you will
sound funny if you use the wrong case. So, let's start our overview with the
prepositions that came up in today's dialog.

mit (with) - Dative. E. g. Gehst du mit ihm ins Kino? (Are you going to the
movies with him?) von (of, from) - Dative. E. g. Hast du das von ihm? (Did you
get that from him?) zu (towards, about) - Dative. E. g. Zu diesem Thema kann
ich nichts sagen. (I can't say anything about this topic)

an (to) - Accusative. E. g. Schreibst du einen Brief an ihn? (Are you writing a


letter to him?) für (for) - Accusative. E. g. Hast du ein Geschenk für ihn? (Do
you have a present for him?) um (around, at, about) - Accusative. E. g. In
diesem Film geht es um einen jungen Mann. (This movie is about a young man)

in (in) - Dative. E. g. Ich habe ihn im Park gesehen. (I saw him in the park) in
(into) - Accusative. E. g. Ich habe ihn in den Park gehen gesehen. (I saw him go
into the park) auf (on) - Dative. E. g. Ich habe ihn auf dem Marktplatz gesehen.
(I saw him on the market square) auf (onto) - Accusative. E. g. Ich habe ihn auf
den Marktplatz gehen gesehen. (I saw him go onto the market square)
