TITLE:
A statistical analysis determining the better, more consistent
player of two batsmen and bowlers from the finalists of the
Caribbean Premier league T20 2020.

PURPOSE OF PROJECT:
This project involves information from the 2020 CPL T20 tournament.
The tournament comprises of six teams placed into a group stage, each
team plays each other twice and the top four teams at the end of this
stage move on to the knockout round. In the knockout round of this
year’s competition Trinbago Knight Riders (first place in the group)
played Jamaica Tallawahs (fourth place in the group) and the remaining
two teams faced off (St. Lucia Zouks and Guyana Amazon Warriors).
The winners of those two semi-finals would play each other in the final.
In this year's final the Trinbago Knight Riders defeated the St. Lucia
Zouks.

This project is done to compare the performance of two batsmen and

two bowlers from the teams that made the final with the purpose of
seeing whether they were consistent and how their individual
performance affected the outcome of the matches. The batsmen and
bowlers will be compared using statistical data determining who the
better player was.

The batsmen chosen for this project were Lendl Simmons (TKR) and
Andre Fletcher (SLZ) using runs scored in each of their matches
played. The bowlers chosen for this project were Fawad Ahmed (TKR)
and Scott Kuggeleijn (SLZ) using the number of wickets taken in each
of their matches played.
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION:
Data with respect to the background of the CPL T20
tournament was gathered from
https://www.thecricketer.com/Topics/cpl/cpl_2020_caribbea
n_premier_league_tv_odds_streaming_rules_format_schedul
e_fixtures_teams_squads_players.html

Data with respect to the scores of the players was obtained

from the official T20 website https://www.cplt20.com/

The batsmen and bowlers selected for my project were used

because they were in great form throughout the tournament.
Data collected for the batsmen was the total number of runs
scored in each of their matches and the data collected for
the bowlers was the total number of wickets obtained in each
of their matches.

Calculating Standard Deviation

Where &𝒙 is the mean, n is the number of data value and x stands for each
data value, 𝛴(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )) means subtract the mean from each data point,
square and finally add up the resulting values.

This means that standard deviation is equal (=) to the square root of (each
score minus (-) the mean of scores)# divide by the number of scores.

Discussion of findings:

Use mean/standard deviation to say which batsman/bowler was more

consistent.
The arithmetic mean (𝑥̅ ) of TKR batsman, Lendl Simmons worked out to be
32.36 runs which was higher than SLZ batsman, Andre Fletcher whose
mean was 19.18 runs suggesting that the TKR batsman played better on
average, however the opposite occurs amongst the bowlers with SLZ
bowler, Scott Kuggeleijn achieving a mean of 1.54 wickets compared to
TKR bowler, Fawad Ahmed, who achieved a lower mean of 1.18 wickets
suggesting that the SLZ bowler played better on average.
The standard deviation (𝝈) of TKR batsman, Lendl Simmons was
worked out to be 30.85 runs. SLZ batsman, Andre Fletcher’s standard
deviation was worked out to be 15.46 runs which is much less than that of
the TKR batsman. According to the sample data this suggests that the SLZ
batsman was more consistent with the number of runs scored throughout
his games. TKR bowler, Fawad Ahmed’s standard deviation was worked
out to be 1.11 wickets. SLZ bowler, Scott Kuggeleijn’s standard deviation
was very slightly higher with it being 1.16 wickets. So, for the bowlers, with
such a small difference in standard deviation between them being 0.05
there is not a significant difference as to which player was more consistent.

Does the bar chart show that one bowler was always taking more
wickets or that one batsman was scoring higher than the other?
For the bowler’s bar chart (Fig.6), it shows a comparison of how much
wickets were taken each game for both players. If you look at it, you will
see that for most games SLZ bowler, Scott Kuggeleijn, outperforms TKR
bowler, Fawad Ahmed, by taking more wickets with respect to the match
number. For the batsmen bar chart (Fig.5), it shows a comparison of how
much runs were scored each game for both players. If you look at it, you
will see that for most games TKR batsman, Lendl Simmons, outperforms
SLZ batsman, Andre Fletcher by scoring more runs with respect to the
match number.

Did the teams win those matches in which the batsman/bowler

performed better?
The matches where the bowlers, Fawad Ahmed (TKR) and Scott
Kuggeleijn (SLZ) had a better performance (meaning that they took more
wickets than they would usually do) they both came out successful in
winning their games. For TKR batsman, Lendl Simmons, for all his better
performing games, his team came out successful. For SLZ batsman, Andre
Fletcher however for some of his higher scoring games, his team still did
not come out successful in winning.

Did the results you got agree with what you thought in the beginning?
The results I got did agree with what I thought in the beginning. It showed
the results of both the batsmen and the bowlers displaying their
consistency throughout their games and how their individual performances
would have affected the outcome of the matches.

Did you achieve your goal?

My goal of the project was achieved since the results showed a greater
average run rate and a consistent wicket rate for the TKR resulting in them
winning the tournament.

Suggestions for future analysis:

You can expand this project in the future by using other criteria such as
including who wins man of the match, using probability to predict future
outcomes of matches and the inclusion of data team selectors which will
choose players to play certain matches based on their stats recorded.
Conclusion:
With the aid of data gathered and the analysis performed it was found that
both bowlers performed very consistently and the TKR batsman performed
better than the SLZ batsman using the measures of mean runs scored
which showed a positive correlation with the tournament’s outcome as
Trinbago Knight Riders won the tournament by accumulating more points
and had a better score throughout the matches
