Habits of studying

What makes a good student? Sometimes, we think we are doing well but our grades don’t show
that. In other cases, we think we are not good enough to pass a course. However, in the last part
of it, we do it. Maybe, being a good student is not a magic secret. In this opportunity, I will talk
about some1 good and bad habits of studying.

Personally, I admit I have a few2 habits I need to change in order to be a better student. One of
these is postponing things till the last minute. This happens mainly because I rely too much 3on
the fact that I have plenty of 4time to do one specific task. Besides, I am person who likes
interacting with my friends on Instagram5. I spend a great deal of6 time daily chatting and sharing
memes with them. Another bad habit that I need to change7 is how I keep track of my classes. In
the past, when I was in high school8, I used to take lots of9 notes in my notebook. I would even
draw a great number of10 lines and mind maps. Now, this has changed considerably. Since all
classes are online, I prefer to take screenshots of what is shown by the teacher. As a result, my
desktop ends up full of 11images, which will probably be forgotten or confused12. A third bad
habit which I should avoid13 is not focusing on activities that are high priority14. In most of 15the
cases, when I have several16 days to do some activities17, along with procrastinating, I try to do
all of 18them at the same time. Consequently, I get frustrated and finally select few of 19them.

Although my grades and scores haven’t been severely affected, I wouldn’t recommend following
any of20 these bad habits.

According to what I stated above, you may think I am a person who is really a bad example of
student21. However, I also have good habits which you will probably find useful 22. For example,
and for obvious reasons now, I always make sure to have the proper study environment. I’ve
managed to organize a room in a way which very little noise can interfere with my lessons
online23. This was not easy because I´ve asked my sister, whose decisions are hard to change24, to
let me use her bedroom when I need it to study. Fortunately, she accepted. Another good habit
that I have is25 my curiosity. Anytime I find some information or explanation that I don’t
understand clearly26, I ask my teacher or search for answers on Internet. Of course, it’s important
for me to use reliable information. Nowadays, there are more and more27 sources whose articles
are not based on factual data28. For that reason, I always verify if that web page is good or not. A
third good habit I believe I have29 is that I like helping others learn. When I finish preparing for
an exam, and when it’s possible, I offer some of30 my classmates to meet for a review session. If
they don’t understand one topic, I try to explain it in different ways. Those are the three main
good habits which I consider I still have31.

To conclude, as you can see, I don’t consider myself to be a good student yet. Even though I
have developed some32 good habits through years, there are still several33 ones I promise to work
on. So, the advice I can give others for studying is discipline, organization and curiosity. Don’t
overestimate your time and ability to procrastinate. It’s better to do our task when there is plenty

of34 time. Organize not only your room but also your notes and all sources you have at your
disposition. Otherwise, you may get lost in your own screenshots. Finally, you should always be
curious and look for more35 information when you learn.
