Differentiating for learners in a multi-age classroom

Knowing students and how they learn supports teachers in planning for the student success.
During my final placement I was in a Prep/1 class with a diverse group of learners who were at
varying levels of ability in literacy and numeracy. Developing inclusive strategies required
planning for differentiation so that each student was able to participate in the learning
sequence. The following excerpts have been taken from the Science and Design Technology unit,
with differentiation at the whole class level and in lessons.

Differentiation for student achievement is

determined prior to commencing a unit. As I
began this unit midterm, I used the students’
current levels of achievement and the
readiness to learn to reassess if any students
needed further support

shows how I differentiate for learners in
each lesson. Using the previous table, I
have based my differentiation on the
students’ achievement levels.
