Power Gen Solution Sciaps X200 for Oil

Analyzer
In oil analysis programs, lubricating oil is used as a
diagnostic medium because as it circulates through an
oil-soaked system, it picks up dirt from worn surfaces,
as well as contaminants from internal and external
sources. Oil samples are taken periodically for analysis.
The lubricant analysis is then used to determine the
condition of the system.

Wear metal analysis is the backbone of a machine

health monitoring program based on in-service oil analysis. It is effective in the sense that the test
can be applied to determine that the system is normal, is approaching failure mode, or has reached
failure mode. Further damage can thus be eliminated or avoided through immediate stopping and
repair.

Sciaps X Series specially developed EDXRF according to ASTM D4294 Standard Test Method for
Sulfur in Petroleum and Petroleum Products by EDXF; ASTM D7751 is Determination of Additive
Elements in Lubricating Oil by EDXRF Analysis; ASTM D6481 is the standard test method for
measuring lubricating oil using EDXRF.

Conclusion

The wear metal analysis determines the condition of the engine, and not the condition of the
lubricant. Thus, an effective oil analysis program will include analysis of the physical properties of the
lubricant to determine lubricant degradation and contamination. The data from this additional test
can then be used to determine if the lubricant is still working as specified or needs to be replaced.
These additional capabilities make oil analysis more cost effective in predictive maintenance
programs.
