PREFACE
Getting involved in a sport provides opportunities for individuals to see the results of
their efforts. All the different sports are unique, but basketball has a universal appeal that makes
it fun and exciting to play and watch. It says that engaging sports develop the wholesome
personality of an individual. Maritime students should engage any sport for their emotional
stability in the future.
Through sports you learn to respect your coach, your teammates, co-players, officials
and even your opponents. You learn to acknowledge that sometimes your opponent might be
better. Sports teach you anything for development and adjustment of our attitudes and most of
all our self. In basketball, much like life, there are ups and downs, success and failure, endless
challenges, and obstacles.
The module composed of eleven units. In a semester, it is divided into two parts.
For the first part, it enables the maritime students to understand the foundation or the
historical background of basketball: nature, objectives, facilities or equipment and officials of the
game.
Second part of it, covers the basic skills in basketball.
This module provides opportunities for students to gain more knowledge and skills in
playing, develop sportsmanship and the aspects of an individual. It offers variety of learning
activities and strategies. There are icons in every unit.

The game started in Springfield Massachusetts U.S.A. In 1891, James Naismith of

United States created the game basketball. Basketball requires speed, stamina, coordination,
control, precision, and careful handling.

Formerly, the game called as “Naismith Ball,” the modest inventor gave the sport a
twoword termed and that was “basketball.” It was started and being played by just bringing or
carrying the objects and thrown to the basket. Dr. James Naismith formulated 13 rules for a
“new game of ball”. After several years, an additional rules or new rules formulated and
imposed. Basketball is a very popular sport and there are strict rules in playing. The ball may be
passed, thrown, tapped, rolled, or dribbled in any direction, subject to the restrictions laid down
in the different rules.
The nature of playing this game requires positions of the player namely: point guard
player, shooting guard player, forward player, and the center player.

Officials of the Game

There are two kinds of officials officiating the game namely: the running officials and
the table officials. Here are the following officials, their duties and responsibilities:

• Referee
The chief official of the game. They are the ones who are responsible for enforcing
rules and regulations and calling fouls and violations. The number of referees officiating a game
depends on the level of play. In NBA, a crew chief and two referees are assigned to conduct a
game and their official uniform is gray shirt and black pant. In international basketball or NCAA
game, it can be either one referee and one umpire or one referee and two umpires officiate a
game. They wear typical black and white striped shirts and black pants.
• Umpire
Responsible for enforcing pre-game rules such as making sure no one dunks the ball in
warm-ups, making sure that each team is in proper uniform and making sure no-one is wearing
jewelry. Typically, the umpire will watch half of the court and the referee will watch the other
half. Umpires maintain standards of play at sporting events. Essential job duties of an Umpire
are observing game rules, awarding points, imposing penalties, determining results, identifying
infractions, examining participants to make sure they follow safety regulations, verifying scoring
regulations, and announcing winners.

• Announcer
The one who gives information to the spectators, players and other officials involved.
Another roles of an announcer are the following: when a player who scored, player charged with
foul, player attempting free throw ,team granted a time out ,length of time out: 30 seconds or 60
seconds ,player entering game and team rosters.
• Scorer

A scorer plays supportive role in the game basketball. The primary responsibility is to
Engage Sports for Fitness 15

accurately record a game's score. Each time a team scores one or more points,
the scorekeeper must post the updated score on the scoreboard.

• Recorder
There can be one or two scorers in a game depending on the rules of the league and
their job is to write down the stats relevant to the game. They keep a running summary of
points scored, notify field goals and free throws made and missed. They also record the
fouls called on each player and informs a referee if sixth fouls are called against a player (to
eject him from game). Also notes the timeouts and let the referee knows if all timeouts have
been used up by a team.

• Timekeeper
Timer assists referee in recording time. Generally, two timers are appointed by the
league. One is official timer who operates the game clock and the other is shot clock
operator who operates 24 second clock. Official timer alerts referee when each half is going
to start and stops the clock when any kind of interruption occurs during a game (fouls, out of
bounds, timeouts etc.) while shot clock timer informs referee when a player takes 24 or
more seconds to shoot a ball (keeping the ball in possession for 24 seconds or more is a
violation).

• 30-seconds Operator
Responsible for a shot clock violation. The shot clock is used for the entire game,
including overtime periods. The shot clock operator shall control a separate timing device with a
horn that shall have a sound distinct and different from that of the game clock. An alternate
timing device shall be available.
