Problem

Boasting a population of over 21.8 million, New Delhi is a city that has 4.4
million students enrolled in the and 6,000 schools in the area. A closer look at
national educational statistics will reveal that an alarming 75% of students in
grade 6 cannot read grade 2 text. With New Delhi being the second largest
populated city in India, following only Mumbai, the first steps to eliminating the
education crisis begins with leaders within the city taking ownership of
addressing the problems that exist.
Theories
D. Miller’s multiprinciple approach
Education should be considered a right of people and therefore allocated
according to the principle of equality. This implies equal access to quality
education by all.
Utilitarianism
Providing basic education to all will result into betterment of the society or
greater good for greater number.
Solution

Supply free textbooks on time

Municipal and govt schools should distribute free textbooks to students. Parents
may not be able afford to buy them. Hence, students lag in studies.
This relates to D. miller multiprinciple approach - since education is a basic right,
it only makes sense that everyone regardless of their status receives it.

Provision of more aids for schools

Government can tax top tier people to increase aids to school. This relates to
utilitarianism which preaches for betterment of the society.

Improve teacher-student ratio

On paper, Delhi govt schools have one teacher for every 42 students in. On the
ground, there is no balance in teacher allocation. For instance, a school in Sonia
Vihar has 128 students in one section of Class 10, whereas one of the classes in a
Sarojini Nagar school has just 18 students.
An overcrowded classroom is bound to suffer from student absenteeism and poor
teaching quality. The government should fill up teacher vacancies to improve the
teacher-student ratio, which will in turn improve teaching as well learning. It’s
recent plan to transfer principals with good records to schools with poor
performance should be implemented on a larger scale.
