ICT INFRASTRUCTURE IN SCHOOLS

This is the logical, physically structured system of components and activities which can be used
across different information systems. It can be perceived as a complex ICT environment

In a broad sense ICT Infrastructure include; E-Journals, CD-ROM databases, online data bases,
e-books, web based infrastructures and a variety of other electronic resources are fast replacing
the traditional resources.

Examples of ICT infrastructure in school are;

Notebooks, desk top, tablets, smart phones, storage devices, server, database software, clients,
operating systems, LAN, WAN,UPS , CC TV, Routers, switch. Hub, modem, multimedia
projectors, printers and scanner.

 MODEM (Modulator and Demodulator) This is a device or program that enables a


computer to transmit data over telephone or cable lines. It is used to convert digital
signals to analog signals and vise versa.
 ROUTER This is a network device that connects together two or more networks.
It joins a Local Area Network (LAN) to the Wide Area Network (WAN) or Internet. 
 BRIDGE A bridge is a network device that links together  two different parts of a
LAN.
 SWITCH/HUBA hub is a device that connects a number of computers together to make
a LAN. 

 File server:This is a computer that runs software and stores files.

 Terminals: Workstations that give network access

 COMPUTERS /LAPTOP A personal laptop or computer is able to connect with other


devices. e.g. USB and Bluetooth technology

 Tablet devices are used in PAN to bring up calendar, photos, music, videos and more

 Smart phones work like tablet devices to access files. This minimizes the need to always
be near your computer.

 PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) PDAs connect to the PAN through USB cable or
Bluetooth technology. You can see and access your files on a PDA

 SERVER. A server is a computer that provides services to clients and controls access to
hardware, software & other resources

 CLIENT. A Client is a computer that requests or receives services from a server

 Scanner: This  is a device that captures printed material, text, images into the computer
and convert it into a digital file.

 Digital Camera: is an input device that stores the pictures and videos in electronic format

 Printer: This is an output device that prints text or graphics on paper.

 LCD PROJECTOR: An output device that can display and project large images from the
computer system
