Giving and Checking Instructions

As teachers, we have noticed how some of our learners end up confused when we bring

an activity into class and try to explain what they must do. This led us to ask ourselves, how can

we be sure that our instructions are clear and easy to understand? There are some tips and aspects

to consider. First, teachers should plan in advance and consider what and how they will give the

instruction, the vocabulary should be simple and concise; making use of pauses to allow students

to internalize and get the idea. Second, be as explicit as possible, teachers need to make sure they

explain everything related to the task students will develop. Third, divide the instructions if there

are a lot of steps to follow, teachers should take their time to explain each part in the appropriate

moment since it avoids confusion (some learners forget what they have to do).

Also, teachers must give instructions when students are paying full attention, this avoids

that some of them get the idea and others do not. Teachers should use basic instructions in

English and L1 for explanations, repetitions, and exclamations; there must be a balance between

both languages. In addition, teachers should avoid using imperatives; instead, they should use

good models for sentence structure. It is essential that students demonstrate their understanding

of the instruction; this could be done by asking questions, repeating in their own words, or

making a demonstration in front of the class. Finally, teachers should check instructions in each

group, if most of them are doing it as they should then they can focus on the ones who are having

difficulties.
