Centre-half duo set to join 100 club

u Last season Liverpool recorded a fourth successive league double over

Crystal Palace. They won 2-0 at Anfield on the final day of the campaign, with
Sadio Mane scoring twice. This after winning 7-0 at Selhurst Park, to ensure
they spent Christmas on top of the table for the third successive year.

u That aggregate of 9-0 was the club’s second-biggest margin against a

team in both meetings of a Premier League season following the 11-0 against
Ipswich Town (6-0; 5-0) in 2001/02.

u Both Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk could make their 100th league
appearances for the Reds today. In the last home league game against
Chelsea they became the most-used centre-back partnership for Liverpool
under Jürgen Klopp in the top-flight. It was the 34th time, one more than the
pairing of Van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Mo Salah meanwhile is set for his 150th
league game for Liverpool this afternoon.

u The Reds are aiming to keep a club record equalling fourth successive
league clean-sheet against the Londoners, previously set in 1980.

u Liverpool’s first goal last Sunday was the 650th scored in all games under
Jürgen Klopp in match number 322.

u Today Liverpool will fulfil their first 3pm fixture of this season – to equal
the number they played in the whole of 2020/21 (at home to Aston Villa in
April).

League this season.
“In my opinion it will be the most difficult in all of the last
few years. All the teams have improved with bringing players
in, changing the way they play or with new managers. Many
aspects have changed that contributes to the good of the
football so I am really happy to play here in this league.”
Further evidence of that came last month when Alisson
delighted Liverpool supporters by penning a new long-term
deal with the club. The no1, who will celebrate his 29th
birthday in a fortnight’s time, admits he is not usually one for
long-term planning, but he says the chance to extend his stay
with the Reds made perfect sense.
“Normally I really like to live the moment: this season, this
moment, the next challenge, the next game; taking things
step-by-step. But I am really happy about it because me and
my family are really settled in the club and in this country.
“It is a different culture for us but we are really happy here
and our kids are really happy here. So yes, I have no problem
to play out most of my career here. I am really happy about
this deal and I can see that the supporters and the people in
the club are happy as well.”
Something else that has made Alisson happy in recent
weeks is the sight of a full, passionate Anfield again and he
hopes the Reds can reward them with another three points
this afternoon.
“I think football without fans is not football – it’s something
else. So the feeling you experience when you have your
supporters with you on the pitch is amazing.

A BADGE
OF HISTORY
In 1973, flamboyant manager
Malcolm Allison decided the club
needed a rebrand. Out went the
original colour (white with claret-
and-blue stripes), the nickname (‘The
Glaziers’) and the badge (a ‘C’ and a ‘P’
surrounded by the name and nickname).
Memories of the old Crystal Palace as a
place of entertainment (it had housed The
Great Exhibition in 1851) were beginning
to fade and an eagle was seen as more in
keeping with the dynamic type of team he wished
to establish. The new crest featured an eagle
swooping on a football with later changes including
a more aggressive bird and the re-introduction of
the famous old building. In 2012, fans were asked
to vote on a selection of new crests with new owner
Steve Parish favouring a flexible design. The 2012
badge combined elements of two previous designs to
bring the club’s nickname and the London landmark
(destroyed in 1936) together in a more refined way.

John Aldridge, who turns 63 today

1. John Aldridge was 28 when he got his

dream move to Liverpool in January 1987. He'd
been banging in goals for Newport County and Oxford
United for years but was still a Kopite at heart and
was unveiled on the famous terrace itself.

2. “If you're in the penalty area and don't know what to do

with the ball, put it in the net and we'll discuss the options
later.” A famous piece of Bob Paisley advice and something
Aldo most definitely excelled at.

3. John netted three hat-tricks for the Reds

including this one against Charlton at Selhurst
Park. He struck 29 times as Liverpool won the
league in 1987/88 and hit 31 goals in 1988/89.

4. Aldo scored 63 goals in 104 games for LFC

and has the highest goals-per-minute ratio of any
striker to play over 100 games for the club. The
Kop certainly enjoyed this effort against QPR.

5. One of the highlights of a brilliant career came

when Aldridge opened the scoring in the all-Merseyside
FA Cup final of 1989 with his first touch of the game.
The Reds beat Everton 3-2 and coming so soon after the
Hillsborough disaster it was a hugely emotional win.

6. His final appearance and goal for Liverpool came

from the penalty spot in the 9-0 win against Crystal
Palace here in 1989. Aldo came off the bench to
slot the ball home in front of the Kop.

“I JUST WANTED TO GET ON AND GIVE THE FELLAS ON THE KOP

Jolly good yellows

Saturday 13 December 1997 and Liverpool light up
Selhurst Park with their jerseys and their performance in
a commanding 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.
The Reds will sport a yellow change strip again this
season but this was the first of its kind in the Premier
League era after dabbles with gold, ecru (another
reimagined for 2021/22) as well as green and white
numbers earlier in the Nineties. This number would be the
away strip for 1997/98 and the third kit in the following
season.
On this occasion, the Eagles had no answer to goals
from skipper Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and
Oyvind Leonhardsen (inset) as Roy Evans’ side stepped
up their game after a stuttering start to the league
campaign.
Liverpool took full control of this one even before
scoring either side of the interval. On 39 minutes,
McManaman volleyed home from six yards following a
short corner routine.
Owen – on the eve of his 18th birthday – doubled the
advantage 10 minutes after half time with a clipped finish
from the edge of the area after being played through
by Jamie Redknapp. “A sublime goal in the best Anfield
tradition,” reads the Press Association match report with
the Reds’ third only six minutes away.
“That killed the game as a contest and as Palace
piled forward desperately they were caught again on the
break. Owen had plenty of space to measure his cross
and as Fowler and McManaman politely declined the
opportunity, Leonhardsen fired home from 10 yards.”
The report adds the afternoon brought “a consummate
away performance at Selhurst Park.”
The main photograph was taken during the
celebrations following McManaman’s opening goal, here
congratulated by Robbie Fowler – who could easily have
scored a couple himself but for fine saves from Palace
keeper Kevin Miller – and Jamie Carragher,
who played alongside Redknapp in the
centre of Liverpool’s midfield in this one.
Post-match, the boss picked out two of
his England stars for praise for their day’s
work: “Michael has come a long way in a
short time and he has handled that side
well. He showed he is prepared to battle
with the big guys and take the physical
side. Macca cleared the ball off the line,
scored and his general work was fantastic.
That is appreciated by all.”
The Reds will be in home colours today
but a similar outcome will do nicely.

life shares parallels with that of Jamie Carragher.
Then there’s Elisha Scott, the first king of the

some of the characters we reveal.
We’ve drawn on family stories, scoured archives

They deserve their place in Anfield folklore

the ball off your head and then dribble it away. I’d been used to Peter
Shilton more or less just staying on his line, but that was Bruce.”
By now, talk that Wright – a ball-playing centre-back who was good in
the air – was a fitting replacement for Hansen was being thrown back in
his face. It irked him.
“I was a different player to Alan Hansen. I liked to go in and win balls.
Everyone was saying I was filling his boots, but who could fill his boots?
His record and status in the game made that an impossible task. I knew
people would make comparisons, but I was just there to play football.”
After a 5-1 Premier League defeat at Coventry City in December 1992,
Wright was stripped of the captaincy and lost his place in the team
to Danish centre-back Torben Piechnik. He forced his way back in but
over the course of 1993, with Neil Ruddock now his defensive partner,
Liverpool’s form was so patchy that it cost Souness his job in January
1994, not long after an epic 3-3 draw against Manchester United at
Anfield.
“Before the Man United game I had a groin problem so I had an
injection before the game, one at half-time and one at full-time. And
then we were 3-0 down after 20 minutes and I’m thinking: bad idea,
shouldn’t really be playing with a bad groin strain in a game like this.
“But it was one of those games and that’s the way we were. Some
games we were brilliant, others we started slowly and had to fight our
way back in.”
Wright remained in the side under new boss Roy Evans, but an injury
suffered in a 1-0 Premier League loss at Arsenal ended his season early
and that summer it seemed his Anfield days were numbered.
Evans publicly criticised Wright’s attitude – and that of left-back
Julian Dicks – ahead of a pre-season tour of Germany. Both were left
on Merseyside, Dicks was subsequently sold back to West Ham and
Evans brought in centre-halves John Scales and, for a record fee, Phil
Babb.
There was speculation that Wright was on his way out, but after
recovering from another injury he knuckled down following a pep-talk
from an unlikely source.
“Ruddock, Babb and Scales had come in and all the papers said I was

going. Not a chance. I’d never given up on

anything as a player in my life, but I was
getting a lot of stick.
“Gerry Marsden, who was a good friend
of mine, said to me: ‘Don’t give up – stop
feeling sorry for yourself and get back in
there’. Well that was the gist of it anyway
– I won’t use the exact words he did!”
Evans introduced a new three-man
defensive system with wing-backs to get
Ruddock, Babb and Scales into his team.
It led to a Reds resurgence, but in March
1995, with right wing-back Rob Jones
suspended, Evans moved Scales out to
that position and brought Wright in from
the cold to face Manchester United at
Anfield.
On his first start for almost a year, the
no5 was outstanding in a 2-0 Liverpool
win. “We call him Lord Lucan,” Evans
joked afterwards.

Liverpool 4 Palace 0 (24 June 2020)

The Reds moved to within touching distance of their first

Premier League title as Palace were beaten behind-closed-
doors at Anfield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was on target with a superb free-kick
after 22 minutes and Mohamed Salah effectively settled the
contest with a cool finish from Fabinho’s perfect pass just
before the break.
Fabinho then produced something even more special in the
54th minute when he drilled a magnificent rising right-footed
finish from more than 30 yards into the net at the Kop end.
Salah teed up Sadio Mane for the final goal of the game with a
slide-rule pass with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The victory meant Liverpool had scored 100 or more goals
in all competitions for a third consecutive season – the first
time they had done so since 1986/87 when they made it eight
in a row.
Fabinho marked his 50th Premier League appearance with a
41st victory – a tally bettered by only Aymeric Laporte (43) and
Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben, Ederson (all 42).

SET-PIECE SPECIALISTS
Palace 1 Liverpool 2 (23 November 2019)

Roberto Firmino scored the winner five minutes from time as the Reds
stretched their unbeaten Premier League sequence to 30 games.
The Brazil forward poked in from a corner to restore his side’s lead three
minutes after it looked as if Wilfried Zaha had rescued a point for the
Eagles.
Zaha’s 82nd-minute goal cancelled out Sadio Mane’s tenth goal of the
campaign just after half-time. But the Palace winger also wasted a great
chance late on when he blazed over from close range.
Liverpool’s victory maintained their eight-point lead at the top of the
table. Boss Jürgen Klopp said: “In a game like this you have to make sure
you are ready to fight for the result. I’m happy with the result and big parts
of the performance because I know it’s not possible to be brilliant every
game.”
Firmino’s strike meant that since the start of the 2018/19 season,
Liverpool had scored 38 goals from set-pieces in the Premier League
(including penalties) – eight more than any other club.
