HEAT LOSS CALCULATIONS

In designing a heating system, the first step is to estimate

the amount of heat loss of each room, then size the heating equipment to
meet these losses. Heat leaks out through: - walls
ceiling and roofs
windows
doors
floors
natural infiltration
or forced ventilation

Almost all building products now on the market have set values
of their resistance to heat flow expressed in BTU's per square foot.
Once all the components of the structure are known their individual values
can be added to give the total reiistance to heat flow. This Is then
changed to conductance (I.e. R = U ) which is then changed to watts,
(i.e. 1 KW = 3413 BTU )
( 1 Watt = 3.413 BTU) 0
therefore conductance (8TU) 7 3.413 = watts loss per square foot for 1
change of temperature. oAs this area in Orillia has a temperature
0
difference (T.D.) of 83 (72 to _11 ) the conductance in watts is
multiplied by 83 to give the watts loss per square foot of the structure.

There are pre-calculated tables in watts per square foot per

degree temperature difference which may be multiplied by B3° to give the
proper heat loss for most of the common building constructions found.
Some of the common ones are as f0110ws:

and total these for each individual room.

PARK STREET COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

HEAT LOSS CALCULATIONS

In designing B heating system, the first step is to estimate

the amount of heat loss of each room, then size the heating equipment to
meet these 105585. Heat leaks out through: - walls
ceiling and roofs
windows
doors
floors
natural infiltration
or forced ventilation

Almost all building products now on the market have set values
of their resistance to heat flow expressed in BTU's per square foot.
Once all the components of the structure are known their individual values
can be added to give the total reiistance to heat flow. This is then
changed to conductance (i.e. R = U ) which is then changed to watts,
(i.e. 1 KW = 3413 BTU )
( 1 Watt = 3.413 BTU) 0
therefore conductance (BTU) 7 3.413 = watts loss per square foot for 1
change of temperature. oAs this area in Orillia has a temperature
0
difference (T.D.) of 83 (?2 to _11 ) the conductance in watts is
multiplied by 83 to give the watts loss per square foot of the structure.

There are pre-calculated tables in watts per square

0
foot per
degree temperature difference which may be multiplied by 83 to give the
proper heat loss for most of the common building constructions found.
Some of the common ones are as follows:

RICID CONDUIT

Rigid conduit is one of the oldest methods of l'JlI'Hlg, and

from the st~ndpoint of safety is superior to any other. The purpose
of rigid conduit is to ensure the safety of tho wires and at the same
time reduce the hazard of fire.

The advantage of conduit is that it alJ.ow8 freedom to replace

the wires easily at any time. Most large up-~o-date bUildings are
wired io conduit. The conduits are put in p1ac8 and n~8 imbedded in
the concrete and masonry; the only visible parts are th3 outlet boxes
from which the wires are fished from one outlet to a~othor.

Rigid conduit is made especially fo!' containL;g elect.ric

wires; hence, it must be free of all rough spots. It is made of
mallea~le steel so that it can be bent easily. It comes in IO-foct
lengths which are threaded at both ends.

Rigid conduit comes in differe~t types, zinc, galv3nized and

A continuous ground for all parts of the wirirQ ~y~tem is

provided so that it is not necessary to install s8para~e co~duc~orG
to ground individual pieces of equipment and appl;a~c8s.

The conduit is fastened to the boxes ~ith lockruts and

the wires from the sharp edge of the cOlldui t" L1 most instalJ.a:'ions,
a single locknut and bushing is suffici8~t unlesG install~tions i~

HEAT LOSS CALCULATIONS

In designing a heating system, the first step is to estimate

the amount of heat loss of each room, then size the heating equipment to
meet these 10ss8s. Heat leaks out through: - walls
ceiling and roofs
windows
doors
floors
natural infiltration
or forced ventilation

Almost all building products now on the market have set values
of their resistance to heat flow expressed in BTU's per square foot.
Once all the components of the structure are known their individual values
can be added to give the total reiistance to heat flow. This is then
changed to conductance (i.e. R = U ) which is then changed to watts,
(i.e. 1 KW = 3413 BTU )
( 1 Watt = 3.413 BTU) 0
therefore conductance (BTU) 7 3.413 = watts loss per square foot for 1
change of temperature. oAs this area in Orillia has a temperature
0
difference (T.D.) of 83 (72 to _11 ) the conductance in watts is
multiplied by 83 to give the watts loss per square foot of the structure.

There are pre-calculated tables in watts per square foot per

0
degree temperature difference which may be multiplied by 83 to give the
proper heat loss for most of the common building constructions found.
Some of the common ones are as follows:
