PAST OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING can be tracked back to the start of the Industrial revolution in the late 18th
century.

Some of the early practitioners of Industrial Engineering include:

Adam Smith (1723-1790) he popularize the Division of Labor and Labor Theory value

Robert Owen (1771-1858) he regulates the working age as well as the controlling of work hours.

Charles Babbage (1791-1871) he regulates the job rotation and job specialization.

Frederick Taylor (1856-1915) he regulates the Improving the work performance and the reduction of
time needed to do the task.

Henry Gantt (1861-1919) he invented the Gantt chart

Frank and Lilian Gilbreth (1868-1972) they are known for Therbligs, psychology of management.

Henry Fayol (1841-1925) he identified the five-primary function of management.

Initially, industrial engineering was almost entirely motivated by the desire to improve the efficiency and
profitability of manufacturing operations. Since then, the constant invention and development of new
machinery and power sources has presented new challenges for industrial engineers to discover new
applications for these technologies and optimize their use to increase productivity.
