INTRODUCTION

Pharmacy is a branch of pharmacology which deals with collection, preparation, standardization,

compounding and dispensing of drugs in such a way so as to make the medication suitable for
easy, effective and palatable administration in the treatment of a disease. Pharmacist is a
multifaceted professional with the key goal of promoting safe, effective use of medicines through
person-centred care.

Pharmacy practice therefore involves the review and interpretation of prescription orders; the
compounding, labeling, and dispensing of drugs and devices; drug product selection and
medication-use evaluation (MUE); patient monitoring and intervention; and the provision of
information related to use of medications and non-pharmacological modalities. The American
Pharmacists Association (APhA) describes the mission of pharmacy as serving society as ‘‘the
profession responsible for the appropriate use of medications, devices, and services to achieve
optimal therapeutic outcomes.’’

This project contains diverse information on topics related to medicines and their relationship with
the world of pharmacy and our training as future pharmacists.

HOW LONG CAN MEDICINE BE USED AFTER THE
EXPIRATION DATE?

"In the case of daily or chronic use, one year from dispensing is the safe expiration date." Liquid
antibiotics need to be reconstituted after the expiration date the pharmacist gives, so they should
be used immediately.
It is the date until which the stability of the drug is guaranteed in its original container or container,
not opened or manipulated and stored in adequate conditions. Medicines have a legally
established maximum expiration limit of 5 years.

Personal Opinion

It is claimed that once the expiration date has passed, most pharmaceutical preparations lose
efficacy, and some may develop a different and adverse reaction profile in the body. Beyond
doing good, these types of substances bring health risks. Given this, it is extremely important to
review and discard drugs that no longer serve, as their toxicity is dangerous.

HOW SHOULD MEDICINES BE STORED?

Generally, medicines should be stored in their original container place. The stability/effectiveness
of some medicines depends on storing them at the correct temperature, for example, those
medicines requiring refrigeration.

Personal Opinion

Store your medicines in a cool, dry place. For example, store it in your dresser drawer or in a
kitchen cabinet away from the stove, sink, and any hot appliances. You can also keep your
medications in a storage box, on a shelf, or in a closet. I, like most people, probably keep my
medications in a bathroom cabinet.

I HAVE HEARD SOME FOODS INTERACT WITH
MEDICATIONS. WHICH ONES DO THIS?
Taking medicine is a normal routine for many people,
but there are many aspects to think about to avoid
unwanted interactions. When a food affects
medications in the body, this is called food-drug
interaction.
There are a variety of food and drug interactions that
can occur, but here is a small list of common drugs and
how food affects the way they are used in the body.

Green, leafy vegetables, which are high in vitamin K, can decrease how well aspirin thins
the blood.
Grapefruit juice alters the way the body absorbs statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) like
Lipitor in the blood.
Calcium channel blockers are prescribed for high blood pressure and are also affected by
grapefruit juice. May cause overly high levels of the drug in the blood.
Dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese decrease the absorption of antibiotics.
Alcohol affects insulin or oral diabetic pills. Alcohol prolongs the effects which leads to low
blood sugar.
Pain reliever drugs with acetaminophen should not be taken with alcohol because it has a
higher chance of causing severe liver damage.
Personal Opinion

There are a lot of foods that can interact with your medications.
The best thing to do is to ask your pharmacist which foods you should stay away from when
taking a particular medication.
It's also important that you are honest with your prescriber about your diet so that he/she can
make well informed decisions surrounding your health.

WHAT VACCINATIONS ARE IMPORTANT FOR
SENIORS?
Several preventable diseases cause significant illness and
even death in unvaccinated seniors.
It is important for older adults to keep vaccines current. The
most important vaccinations seniors should discuss with their
physicians include:
Flu vaccine: Is especially important for people with
chronic health conditions. Experts recommend an
annual flu vaccination for most adults, and any patient
with underlying high-risk conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.
Pneumococcal vaccine: Pneumonia causes significant illness in seniors and is
responsible for 60,000 deaths each year. Seniors and others who are high risk for
developing pneumonia should receive the pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine as a one-
time vaccination.
Shingles vaccine: The zoster vaccine, which has only been available for a few years,
helps to prevent or minimize a shingles outbreak. Shingles is a very painful, contagious
blistering rash. The vaccine may decrease your risk of having shingles by about 50 percent,
or at least minimize its severity.
Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap): You should get this vaccine if you are less than 64
years old to replace one of the series of tetanus vaccines. It contains the same components
as the tetanus-diphtheria vaccine with the addition of the pertussis component.
Personal Opinion

As we get older, our immune systems tend to weaken over time, putting us at higher risk for certain
diseases. Thankfully, there are vaccines available to help protect our loved ones from contracting
illnesses and developing very serious side effects.
some adults with specific health conditions should not get certain vaccines or should wait to get them.
It’s important to talk with their doctor to make sure you get the vaccines that are right.

HOW DO I INTRODUCE MYSELF AS
A PHARMACIST?

Health care professionals who supply and sell prescription drugs and over-the-counter
medications. Offer advice to customers on how to take medications and their possible side effects.
May investigate whether the dosage prescribed to a pharmacy customer is correct, or find out, by
asking questions, whether the customer is taking another medication that may interact
dangerously with the prescribed medication.

Personal opinion

I introduce myself as an honest, responsible and qualified professional to perform, assist and provide
the necessary care to people who require it, how to dispense prescribed medications, and how they
are used and their side effects.

PHARMACY IS A JOB THAT PAY WELL? WHY?

You’ll make good money

Even when they’re starting out, pharmacists are practically guaranteed to take home a sizable
salary.
“You start off at a pretty good salary compared to other professions,” Moss says. “The downside
is your income doesn’t really grow from there.”
On average, pharmacists make $121,500 annually, according to BLS data. The lowest 10% earn
an average of $89,790, while the highest 10% earn more than $154,040.

Personal Opinion

In my opinion, it is a well-paid job, but it depends on many factors such as whether the pharmacy is
public or private, as well as whether you are a licensed pharmacist or pharmacy technician.

CONCLUSION
A better health outcome is the most significant benefit of using medication correctly as prescribed.
Doctors prescribe medications to treat your symptoms and to help you manage or overcome
certain health conditions. However, they should be stored in a way that means they are safe and
will be effective when administered. All medicines have storage requirements that are specified
by the manufacturer.

In other hand, a vaccine activates our immune system without making us sick. Many dangerous
infectious diseases can be prevented in this simple and effective way.
During vaccination, the body is exposed to either a weakened microbe (bacteria or virus). A
good vaccine will provide adequate and prolonged protection against the disease.

To be pharmacists you must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize. In the field, you will be
pulled in different directions at the same time. You have to be able to prioritize, remain professional
and remember patient care/safety above all.
It is important to emphasize that the profession of pharmacist is well paid. In our country every
day the labor demand requires trained pharmacists, since the pharmaceutical industry is
constantly growing.
In addition, if you are a graduate of a recognized university you could practice the profession in
other countries such as the United States. Following a few requirements, the main one being to
present your suitability exam, which demonstrates that you are a professional pharmacist.
