Diphthongs/Vowel gludes

Sounds during the articulation of which the tongue starts is the position of a particular vowel and
moves in the direction of the position of another vowel,within a single syllable.
Diphthongs are representend by sequences of two symbols,the first indicating the starting point
and the second the direction of movement

Classificafion of Diphthongs Closing Diphthongs


Diphthongs in which the glide is from one vowel position to that of a close /high vowel

Diphthongs in which the glide is from one vowel position to that of a close/high vowel
Eg: make,boy

Closing Diphthongs can be Fronting or Retracting


1. Fronting Diphthongs
The glide is towards a ftont vowel
2 Retracing Diphthongs
The glide is towards a back vowel

Centring Diphthongs
Diphthongs in which the glide is from one vowel position to that of a central vowel
Eg: here,pair

Falling and Rising Diphthongs


1. Falling Diphthongs
the first element has greater prominence while pronouncing it
2. Rising Diphthongs
the second element has greather prominence while pronouncing it
