Resources to support learners

As teachers we can support students’ mathematical understandings using

manipulatives. The final Mathematics unit for Term 3 focused on developing a range of
mental strategies for addition and subtraction problems (Year 1). To support students, I
modified the ‘Friends of Ten’ concept into a physical object that could be used to
support the class.

Created to support students in Year 1, the rainbow provides a visual tool to support
students in understanding the relationships between numbers that add up to ten.
This resource became a valuable learning tool for Prep students as well, as they too
could see the relationships between the numbers, thus extending their own knowledge
of number facts.
