2021 Mini-Grants to Teachers

The Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) is offering Mini-Grants to Teachers in
Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan Counties. These Mini-Grants of up to $500 will be awarded to
teachers who need financial assistance with special projects, materials, or classroom resources. Our
Partners in Philanthropy, joined by individual donors committed to enhancing the quality of life in the
Eastern Panhandle, have pledged more than $40,000 in total Mini-Grants this year. Deadline for
applying is October 1st. Teachers who are collaborating with others on larger projects and programs
should consider applying for one of our larger Youth or Education Grants. Applications for those can
be found on our website at www.EWVCF.org.

The Need

More and more, teachers are faced with the challenge of keeping children interested and engaged with
few resources beyond the basics. We expect the needs to be even greater post-pandemic. The Mini-Grants
to Teachers program has awarded grants to fund classroom book sets, a giant abacus, Speed Stackers,
Rekenreks, an Autism Cafe, K’NEX building sets, sheet music, Lego Mindstorm kits, pedometers, Apple
TVs, pBone instruments, a projector, wood chisels, an alto flute, eBooks, a couple of robots, art supplies,
a river tank system, digital cameras, calculators, ukuleles, graphic tablets, and much more. This year,
Mini-Grants will be awarded to teachers who have a burning desire to improve the classroom experience
for their students, and the ability to inspire the members of our grants committee to support your efforts.

How Does It Work?

Through a simple one-page application, PreK-12 public school teachers in Jefferson, Berkeley, and
Morgan Counties can apply for a grant of up to $500.
The objective is to encourage and support teachers who have great ideas that will enhance the learning
experience for students. Mini-Grants can be used to purchase supplies and materials for special projects;
provide resources for the classroom; and support projects and programs that are not covered by school
budgets or other means.
All grant recipients are asked to report on the expenditure of grant funds and the results of the supported
project by the end of the school year. We encourage teachers to take and email photos as well.

Who Can Apply?

All Jefferson, Berkeley, and Morgan County public school PreK-12 teachers are invited to apply. Public
schools are defined as being supported by public funds and are part of the free public education system.
Any school that charges tuition to students is NOT eligible.

How kids start their day sets the stage for how the rest of the day will go. We can’t control how their days start at home, but we
can change the stage at school! Mindfulness has a whole host of benefits, including improved attention, increased
compassion, and stress reduction. Mindfulness can put your students on the right track for the rest of the day!

Studies suggests that mindfulness education — lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative
effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior
problems. The project goals is to design a meditative space for students to attend facilitated Mindful Clinics instead of recess
detentions. We will dedicate a calm and welcoming space where students will learn to acknowledge, feel, communicate, and
reflect on their emotions and behaviors. By taking a proactive approach to behavioral support and intervention we hope to
decrease behavioral referrals and recess detentions by teaching students to self-regulate, monitor and correct behaviors, as
well as develop greater empathy. We will teach students tools and skills to help them relax, refocus, and reflect. Students will
learn to use mindfulness practices, such as mindful breathing, mindful movement, and meditation.
