Instructions and Process Description


1. Number the pictures to show steps or stages in the process of building this
unusual aircraft.

2. The instructions for how to build the aircraft are shown below. With a partner,
write the process description. The first stage has been written for you.

Instructions
a. Split a match along its length.
b. Attach the wings and the body to the tailplane.
c. Catch four flies and put them in the fridge to calm them down.
d. Apply glue to the wings of the aircraft.
e. Attach the flies to the glue.
f. Breathe warm air onto the flies to activate them.
g. Test-fly your aircraft!

Process description
(Note that in Task 1 writing, lists (like the instructions list above), are not allowed.
In all IELTS writing you must write ‘prose’ (sentences that join together to make
paragraphs).

Example text:

First of all, a match is split along its length. After that, the wings and the body are
attached to the tailplane. Next, four flies are caught and put in a fridge to calm
them down. While the flies are cooling, glue is applied to the wings of the aircraft.
Finally, the flies are attached to the glue and warm air is breathed across them,
causing them to come back to life. Now the plane can fly.
